The problem with infrared ones is accuracy changes depending on distance an angles etc. I'd much rather use digital thermometers as all u have to do is glance every time u walk past, no need to keep opening and closing the viv an disturbing snakes

you only really need a digital thermometer, no need to spend money on a temp gun

should i put the digi thermometer probe on the substrate ?

i know some people say attach it to the thermostat probe with a rubber band but wouldnt it make sense to put it on the surface were the snake will be it says the temp of the heat mat on the stat obviously ?

thanks for the advice on the temp gun didnt realise distance nd angles made a diffrence

It should be on the mat, the snake will burrow and sit on the mat directly so you need to monitor that temperature rather then the top of the substrate.

does that still apply if your using very small woodchips that stop him getting direct contact with the mat. the substrate is an inch thick layer aswell

They will still burrow in wood chips and there should only be a light sprinkling over the mat, an inch is a bit deep.

Have you got your digi thermometer yet? If not set the stat to about 26 - 27 deg C and then when you have you thermometer you can fine tune it to 28.

Are you using beech chips or aspen at the moment?

i was using small chips im not shor what type but they are the same as the ones which come with the snake.to get the correct temps with the chips i had to hav the stat very high so i thought changing it to a thin layer of aspen would be easier to heat up without having to set the stat stupidly high

You are only having to have your stat set higher as your current thermometer is reading the air temperature and you have an inch layer of substrate through which the heat needs to travel. Beech chips are fine to use you just need to thin it out by either removing some or moving them over to the cool side of the viv and making it nice and deep for snakey to play in. You don't need to worry about heating the substrate up it is purely the mat that you need to take the temperature reading from, which will be easy to do when you get your digi thermometer

No it won't. 86F is the highest that you want the temps to be but I am not sure how many degrees over that it is when it will burn a snake.
