you need a thermostat on the mat. If the mat gets too hot the snake will burn. The flaking you were talking about could be burns if you dont think shes due a shed.

yes. You place the probe onto the heat mat. The heat mat plugs into the thermostat, set your temp to the correct temp on the dia; and the thermostat gets plugged into the mains

The thermostat is basically a box that you plug your mat into that controls the temperature So mat plugs into stat, stat plugs into wall and there is a probe from the stat which you put onto the heat mat to read the temps. I accidentally didn't have one on mine (long story but I ended up plugging something else into it) and my heat mat hit temps of 40C up. Which, basically is enough to seriously hurt the snake. I don't want to come across as a scare monger but I'd get one asap. Its cheaper than treating a sizzled snake :)

you will need a digital thermometer too. The probe of that goes in the hot end of the housing. The strip ones that stick on the wall are no good. Digital are accurate xx

if you can get pics of her skin and the possible scale damage that would help us identify if it is burns or not xx

I'm going to get shot for saying this but I'd move the heat mat and stick it to the side of the viv. It'll help reduce the risk of burns etc. It isn't ideal but it would probably be safer than leave it on the floor :)

Flare is a beautiful snake by the way :) I'm really jealous

You should have a hide at each end of the viv. A cardboard box with a hole in it will do if you are strapped for cash, there are lots of ideas for homemade hides in the DIY section.
