| reptile shops can normally probe or a vet but they may charge. i have never seen a gravid female, how old are they? |

| tha was because she was egg bound and its far from the answer. snakes are not social animals and are best kept seperatly anyway |

You are best just keeping them separated, especially as they are so young and you are not sure of the sex of both of them. You will be OK either using a RUB (cheaper option) or one of the fauns in this post http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9878
Either of these should last you a while and you can save up in the meantime for two 4' vivs that you can stack for when they are older and will last them a lifetime. |

Ok this is going to sound really harsh but if you cannot afford two set-ups then you cannot afford 2 opposite sex snakes.
Right now that is out the way I will say that it is possible to afford 2 set-ups for not much more money than the one. If you have the snakes in 1 wooden viv then it is possible to use a wooden partition to seperate the snakes. If you put your heatmat in the middle of the viv and put the partition on top of that then each snake would have half the heatmat each. It also means that you will only need 1 thermostat. I would still invest in 2 thermometers though just to be on the safe side. Hides etc can be made from cardboard boxes, tubes etc. Then you just need a waterbowl each. They will need a 3ft viv each when they are older but you could set-up a savings jar for that and just put away a couple of quid a week.
At the moment your snakes are still quite young so it is unlikely that they will breed. However, it is possible as snakes all mature at different rates. If your female becomes gravid to soon then she could suffer serious consequences, including possible death. Even if she lays successfully, breeding too young can stunt the growth of the female and cause future health problems. There are other complications to cohabitting snakes and I do advise you to read the sticky on cohabitting. It is long but will help you to make an informed decision on future plans.
Scaly is right, I have just had one of my females spayed. Believe me, it is not something I would recommend as a form of contraception and it is still something that I believe is fairly new. My girl was only spayed because she had a history of laying infertile clutches and had become eggbound. Since it was more than likely that she would lay again in future years and it would most likely eventually kill her, we took the decision to have her spayed at the same time of her having her retained eggs removed. I am so lucky in that so far she is recovering well but it could have been a completely different story. It has cost me around £300 in vets bills so far this year, and it cost me about £100 last year when she struggled to lay. I don't begrudge paying it as to me she is worth so much more but if you are short of money then you really don't want to take the risk of having to pay for expensive vet treatment for something that could have been avoided.
Sorry, I have probably gone on a bit but it is something I feel strongly about. I have never felt so worried and helpless than I did while connie was struggling to lay her eggs and it really makes me angry when people willingly put their snakes at risk. |
