i, personally, would never use any size heat mat without a stat, just isn't worth the risk in my opinion |

Contrary to popular belief a Thermostat is not an optional acessory this is a thread that pops up a lot on here and in a few groups on Facebook that i belong too so the other day i did a lil experiement with an unstatted 7 watt heatmatt i only left it on for ten minutes,,the result is below

Carter that was when i decided to take the pic a few minutes after it was up to 49 at which point i switched it off it makes me mad that so many pet shops advise new hobbyists that stats are unessacery as you can see this was only a small 7 watt 6x11 mat |

Even under the tank as i have some of mine though it might not pose a serious burn risk exposure to prolonged high temps can cause serious neurlogical damage theres absolutely no way id consider not using a stat for any of my lot |

if its under the faun it could potentially melt the plastic too and cause a fire risk |

It may be worth you reading this thread that was posted not so long ago which shows a melted faun on page 2 when a stat was not used.
