Hi there
This forum has been an absolute goldmine of information.

I'm going to be getting my very first corn snake in a few weeks but firstly I want to have everything up and running smoothly first. I've just bought the first vivarium, a VivExotic LX24. My problem here is what to do about the heating, I was thinking about a heating mat, where would I place this? Under the substrate? and could that cause damage to my pet?

here is a link to the vivarium in question;

HI there and welcome, a heat mat is the best source of heat, you would put this inside the viv under the substrate, you would also need a digital thermometer, which you can get for a couple pounds from somewhere like ebay and a thermostat which would control the temperature of the mat. Many pet shops will say this is an unnessary piece of equipment, but it can potentially prevent a fire and/or burns to your snake. Good luck, don't forget we want pics when you have he/she, and you're in the right place for questions

Thank you for your reply, it's exactly the advice I was after. I just wasn't sure that the mat wouldn't cause a fire with the aspen shavings. I'll definitely upload pics, i'm excited about it, something to look forward to after exams!

Haven't even picked the little fella out yet,lol. I wanted to go to a breeder as i don't know how well Pets At Home keep records and such, but there is none i can find around here. Just wanting to get everything up and running for the little guy before i commit to a certain one.

I cant speak for others' experience, but my nearest P@H is very good- although the snakes cost more than from a private breeder, (i think around 50 quid as opposed to between 10-25 privately,) they DO keep feeding records and won't sell you a snake that isn't a reliable feeder. The hatchie we got last year had records back to her birth, as they'd kept the notes from the supplier and continued on from there. My local P@H also has a couple of quite knowledgable bods working in the rep section there, but its lucky dip if those blokes are in on the day i go.

and you thought there was no such thing as a stupid question....
