Hey everyone,
new to the forum and new to owning a snake.
Hoping you guys can inform me better of the handling of a new snake. I just bought a 5yr old Corn Snake from a family.
He loves being handled and is very friendly and used to kids and cats, and his last surroundings were quite hectic. Amazing calm temperament though. Got the whole set-up and everything with him and had to handle him prior to purchase and while installing his viv in my home. I put his viv in the bedroom so it is nice and quiet for him.
Should I still avoid handling him completely for 5-7days or are older snakes quicker to adjust, keeping in mind he still has the same viv and hides.

| Hello and welcome. I think it is advisable to let him settle for a week still as there are new sights and smells but I have young corns so not really sure. Lots of people with good advice on here so don't be afraid to ask any questions. |

| I would still let him settle for 7 days before feeding or handling. Even though he's used to cats, still keep him away and don't trust the cats |

| No cats here, just dogs lol. He'll get peace for a week then, just thought an older snake used to that much traffic might not be so bothered by being handled but he has a lot to take in I guess. Thanks! |

| he likely wont be bothered by the handling, its just to let him get used to his new surroundings and smells just really to become more accustomed to your environment. |

Thanks for the advice. Just to build on that, now I'm having to go into his viv to change the water and I've been reaching in to put proper sensors in place and thermostat (which need moved again). While doing this he is very quick to approach and I'm having to avoid him so as to not handle him for the initial week. Should I let him come out if he chooses or actually block handling as I have been doing?

Cool, I gathered it was a guideline as I mentioned the 7 days to my local aquatic and reptile store and they said they advise 2 days to settle, but I was still going to stick to the safer option of 5-7 days.
Just felt a little silly avoiding him approaching me, when it's his stress levels that I'm worried about. Also, worry that backing away might make him think I'm scared and then cause him to reply with the same emotion...
