Hi everyone, just bought two corns albino and candy morph 2 year olds they were fed yesterday at the pet shop, and we are leaving them a week before handling them but they will be due a feed when the week is up should we handle for the first time then feed them or feed them first wait a day then handle them? Also is one day after feeding long enough to wait before handling them ?
Thanks

hey what is your set ups like? any pics? i would give them a week to settle handle for 5 mins and feed. leave fo 2 or three days and handle for 5-10 mins a day until they are happy to be handled, you will learn what mood your snake is in with time. do you have any other reptiles?

We have a 4ft by 2ft viv the pet shop set it up for us before we took it home they put two large hides on the warm end but only large pebbles on cool end not adequate to hide under or behind also they told us we didn't need thermometers or thermostats for the heat mat but after looking on here I see we need a hide for cool end and thermometer and stat, also they put a uv light in is this ok? They were cohabiting before we bought them and the reptile guy in the shop said they have been fine, I am using my phone at the mo but when I go on the laptop I will post some pics we have named the candy morph pheonix but have yet to think of a name for the albino
Thanx for your help

ok, personally i wouls seperate them staraight away, either by getting another viv or putting a divider in until to can get another one. i would normally say turn the mat off but as they were fed yesterday i would try and keep the heat on the viv floor 26 degrees and turn it off tomorrow. others may well say differently. they do not need a uv bulb, and a stat is a must. they need a hide at each end, you can use any tub or box or tube as a hide just put a few in so they have plenty of cover. i presume they have a water bowl?

im also confused by the names or the morphs. when you post pics we will have a better idea

love the name x

Yeah of course they have a water bowl sorry didn't mention it, why should we turn off the heat mat? And will the uv bulb bother them or is it ok to keep in? We were told one was a candy morph? And one was albino he is white with cream/beige markings the other is peach coloured with pinky red markings
Thanx

if one is whote and yellow than its more than likiley a snow and the other could be a candy cane but im not great on morphs but there are 252 so its difficult to go on that. if you do not have a stat the mat could reach harmful potentionally fatal levels, one of my mats if it is unstated reach 50+ and corns hot end should be between 26 and 28. i doubt the uv bulb bothers them but it will give off heat also and should have a guard. you can get push led lights from pound land that you can stick on with a glue gun for view, but general daylght is more than enough. also just as a heads up, tape or anything sticky is a no no in the viv. x

This may sound like a dumb question but I can't find an answer to it, do corns ever try to constrict people? I have a three year old son and eight year old daughter I would obviously never leave them unattended with the snakies but I just wanted to check
Thanx

my midnight trys her damned hardest, but she only a yearling, they may well try, but whether they would do any damage i do not know, i wpuld think that an adult could un constrict a snake. they would normally only ontrict some they can eat, and they wont eat you x

day and night settings are pointless as we turn our lights on at night and off during the day. they tend not to work great and there is no need to change the temps. i use habistat mat stat and find the only vary 0.9 of a degree. i get mine from surrypets and would not fault them it works out 23 pounds for one of the most important piece of equipment.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your new additions.

Unfortunately shops aren't always particularly great with giving the best advise on how to provide the ideal set-up. I would definitely consider seperating the 2 snakes. If they are male and female, they are coming up to an age where they will breed and if the female is too small then you could potentially end up with a dead snake or some very expensive vet bills. Even if the shop says they are the same sex, this is no guarantee as some of our members have already discovered. The cheapest way to do it would be to get someone handy with woodwork and make a partition for the middle of the viv. you could then put the heatmat in the middle with the partition on top so that each side of the viv would have half the heatmat. That way you wont need to get another heatmat or thermostat until the snakes are outgrow their section of the viv.

I'm glad you have decided to get a thermostat. It really is essential in making sure the temperatures in the viv are ideal. You also need at least 1 digital thermometer. you can get these for just a few pounds off ebay. these are the ones i get http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIGITAL-THERMOMETER-FAST-DISPATCH-/230766608741?pt=UK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN&hash=item35bac30165

Just want to add that I recommend that you don't feed them anymore until you have your thermostat and digital thermometers set up and running consistantly for a few days. It is so much easier to mess about making adjustments if you don't have to worry about your snakes regurgitating
