Hi all,
Fudge is a butter stripe corn and is 6 months old.
We bought him at the Chemsford expo in september, set him up in the normal way and tried to feed him a week later and he refused it.
After 2 months of not feeding, we took him to a reptile shop to see if they could get him to feed, but as much as they tried fudge either refused it or regurged it.
The shop want me to go there to discuss options and the only thing I can think of is putting him to sleep.
Would it be worth taking him to a vets or should I consider putting him down?
Obviously, I want whats best for him and I would make that decision if it needed.
Any advice? |

if you are using tongs to try feed him try using your hand. my lil'en shayde wont take off tongs or if i leave the pinkie with him. i have to feed it to him with a little wiggle using my fingers. and very slowly wiggle a brained pinky in his face! just an idea cause it worked for me! :) |

I'm Martin, the o/h! We're in maidstone.
I have tried everything I could think of. I followed the guide to non-feeding snakes posted by Lee in the general section.
I've tried braining, heating, cut it in half, dipped in tuna, took fudge for a drive, left the pink over night, covered his tub in a box, changed his tub to a smaller one and added a vitamin suppliment to his water. Everything I tried was over a period of 8-9 weeks and always left him for 6-7 days between attempting to feed him.
He was always very active and strangely maintained his weight even though he hasn't fed since we bought him.
He is now at a reptile shop who is trying without success to get him to feed. They have done the same things as me, but they have assist fed him as well as I am not experienced in assist feeding, but he has regurged every time. He's been there for 3 months.
I don't know whether to take him to a vet or stop his suffering.

if he hasnt lost weight hes not nessecerally suffering. i would bring him home, settle him in for a week or so. ive heard that if you take there water away for a couple of days and then give them a soggy mouse sometimes work.
but there was a really good thread about scenting with a chick thigh or actually feeding a pinky sized bit of chick thigh. |

We thought so too. The seller told us he had eaten well and shed before we bought him. He didn't give us any records. We should have asked for them, but records can be faked.
I'll have to look for that thread on chick thighs. Sounds interesting. Anyone know where I can get them from? |

Most reptile shops will have chicks in store, or would be able to source some for you. Before offering the thigh itself I'd try smearing some chick juices on a pinkie, and then if that doesn't work then offer the chick thigh How's little Lola getting on? I'd love to see an updated pic of her if you have one! |

My snow who's now 9 months started feeding again about 5 weeks ago following a fast of just over 10 weeks, like you i'd checked set up and temps and had tried various methods of feeding. I looked on ebay for chicks and found a shop locally that i could have bought them from, but then had an idea of wrapping the pinky in chicken skin. I bought some chicken breasts with the skin on, and then cut the skin to wrap the pinky's in, i now have them stored in the freezer like that. The only problem i have now is weaning crystal off the chicken scented pinks. It may work, worth a try and chicken skins are easier to get hold of than chicks. |

Hi, I'm quite near you and would offer to take her and try but if your temps and setup are ok I really don't think I can do any more. I appreciate vets are expensive but it's probably the option I would go for. |

Well the reptile shop told me yesterday he was starting to take the pinkie but would then regurge so he hasn't kept anything down. I don't know if that was straight away or after an hour or even over night. I've never had one of my snakes regurge after feeding so I don't know how soon after it would happen.
As to the set up, I have 3 other tubs on the same heat mat as fudge was (they are all still babies!) and they are all fine.
I'm going up to the shop on Saturday and I think I will bring him home. |
