Hello to everyone
Have been reading up on here for a week now so thought id better join up properley and say hello.
Am new to cornsnakes or any snake for that matter.
A mate posted up on our local car club forum that he needed a good home for a 1yr old corn that his young daughter had lost interest in.
So after pondering for 10 minutes and getting some questions regarding care answered from your usefull guide, and then falling in love with the pictures of her,i said yes and picked her up the next day (a week ago) Have since got her a 30 X 24 X 12 inch aquarium,a larger heat matt, and 2 digital temp units with probes. Have spent much of the last week just watching her crawl around lol.
Read on here last night about the importance of a thermostat,so will be getting one of those sharpish, and also not to have any tape inside the vivarium.
The ultratherm heat matt actually told me to tape down the edges of it so that the snake could not get undernieth it,which i have done,so i better remove this!
I have 1 question please regarding temps............
On your guide it says 21 cool end,30 hot end. Now my heat matt instructions say it wont heat the air much, more an object because of the infrared tecnology.
The heat matt covers half the floor area and is on the inside of the glass with 5mm of wood shavings on top.
I have a temp reading at the cool end (30mm deep of wood shavings)rangeing from 19.4c - 21.6c depending on the ambiant temperature,so happy with this.......its the hot end im unsure of. Where should the temp probe go? If i put the probe 20mm above the heat matt it reads around 23-24c.....if i put the probe touching the heat matt it sits between 31.3 and 31.9. So my question is please, should the probe be touching the heat matt or fractionly above it? Many thanks and look forward to being a member of your community.
Regards, Jarratt |

Welcome. Agree with Georgina, switch mat off until you get a stat. Temp at hot end should not go over 30. |

thats ok then, i was worried is was like wood chip you would use for rabbits, which can contain pine, which is toxic to corns. so all is good.
welcome to the forum.
you can get a stat from www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk for about 22 inc next day delivery. |

Perfect, thankyou, will order one now Didnt know that about pine....i have a pine branch in the viv, that she climbs on. Its very dead and dry though as been inside my house for years as an ornament due to it looking like drift wood. Is the toxins in the sap or the wood itself?
