I have just spent the last hour playing "musical vivaria", in an effort to house everyone without having the thicko bloke snake in his original home.... all because typical stupid bloke- my male 08 has just managed to cram his 2 inch diameter body into a half inch space between the door and the shelf in my double-decker viv, trying to get at the girly upstairs -- Naughty Naughty boy
of course 2 into a half does NOT go and I wish he'd asked someone first, cos I found him with his front end waggling, he couldn't go back, he couldn't go forwards and his middle was plainly squished and NOT comfy
After having minor palpitations I managed to open the other end (where the door fits tight to the upper floor) and tilt the floor/shelf thingy just enough to open up the space a bit, so that he could squeeze the rest of himself through. and he crawled into a hide-

(she was just watching him from her warm hide- and didn't look terribly impressed, I think he's ruined his chances..)

I can't mend the gap problem now, so Ive been trying to work out how to move everyone around so he could be alone in the big 2 floor viv- I was going to put debbie in sharons overnight, and sharon in a rub, but after hand drilling a feeding rub to get therm and stat probe through (luckily I have spares of everything atm,) and then unsuccessfully balancing the damn thing on bits and bobs so its raised off the mat, (not sure of rub setup, never kept a snake in one) I gave up and decided that its not the girls' fault, they can stay where they are, and I put the Miscreant in the closed rub, inside his viv with one end over his mat. he has water ins there, and hides and one end on heatmat, but closed lid so can't get into any more trouble for now...

HERE'S THE QUESTION..... (finally!!)

It's still the issue of rub on top of heatmat- is this a problem? can I go to bed and relax? there's not a gap between- the rub has no'feet' so no airflow between its base and the heatmat which is inside the viv.. it's statted of course, and the mat is only half covered by the rub, so I think shouldn't get too hot? might he be better just with no heat overnight? he's not eaten for a week- refused his mouse tonight- so doesnt desperately need heat, does he?

do I need to raise the rub up on something? or can I leave it?

help please????? is anybody else still up and about???

and you thought there was no such thing as a stupid question....

I'd have removed the glass door, but that's just a typical bloke's idea.

Still up and about? Of course, it's only just gone midnight and the night is still young.

yikes- I just went to check the temp before crashing,- I'd poked the thermometer probe between the rub and the heatmat- it was at 36.
so i've unplugged it.
I cant take the door off, or leave it open cos the one door does both snake homes- 2 levels in one very tall viv, they share doors and debbie's still in the top flat

I suppose if your brain is housed inside your tail and you've got 2 places to keep it, the sense gets halved and it makes you twice as daft

I meant remove the door instead of moving the shelf just to free him, then pop him in the jail box.

Leave the mat off overnight and stabilize the temps tomorrow. He'll be OK if he's not eating. Are you using 2 mats, one on each level?

What will you be like after he doesn't eat for 4 months.

cant take the doors off, its not a standard conventional viv- (which I'm beginning to re-evaluate as maybe not such a fabbo bargain..)

there's identical mats in each level, both run off the same stat, but the temps do seem to fluctuate a bit, whichever hasn't got the stat probe seems to run higher by between 1 and 5 degrees difference, which has already had me alternating between the gin and valium bottles..

four months?? eeeeeuuuurghhhhhh

MicroClimate or Habistat and what wattage are the mats?

Big T went 17 weeks with nothing to eat a couple of years back.

its a microclimate 100w standard thingy, running 2x identical 11x11 inch pro-rep mats. dunno wattage on them. I still haven't entirely ruled out the possibility that one of the thermometers is actually a bit iffy- I got a really cheap one from SPS its 'zoo-med' brand- and does seem to be a bit erratic-

anyway, I've left the Errant Knave in his cold, cold cell for the night, to think over what he's done.. I'm just hoping he's not done himself a mischief tho-
(gotta have something to fret about..

I can't even contemplate a four month fast- there's not a gin bottle big enough

right, although the night may be young sadly I'm not, and the small people will be getting up in about 4 1/2 hrs so i'm off-
thanks chaps, yet again- neurosis successfully averted

The Habistat 100W is more stable judging from previous forum posts. The MicroClimate tends to have a wider and sometimes a bit erratic switching range.

The 11x11 mat should be rated at 12 watts.

I use these Lucky Reptile Deluxe thermometers and have found them pretty accurate.
http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/lucky-reptile-thermometer-deluxe-lth-31.html

Make sure that both probes and sensor are properly weighed down or stuck down with a GlueGun on the mats. If the sensor is adrift then it will give a false reading and cause the second to read warmer.

Any chance of a pic of this split level snake condo?

sulking?... he's had a tantrum. this morning I found him sitting in an empty water dish, the kitchen roll in the bottom was swimming, and the kitchen roll tubes I'd put in were soaking wet and flattened.

haven't worked out how to solve the shelf/door gap problem yet... any ideas?

Post a pic of this non-conventional viv showing the doors and shelf. Is it really a half inch gap on the 'wide' side?

What is the gap space between the doors?

These boys really will try anything in the desire for a girlfriend. Alice is having a rest from his searching at the moment as he is in blue. No doubt he will be trying to escape again soon. Thankfully all my girls are upstairs and most of the boys are downstairs in the living room.

Izzy had a 22 week fast last year. I wasn't worried to start off with but towards the end I was beginning to get concerned. It started on 1 Jan last year. He hasn't started fasting yet this year so I'm hoping he doesn't do it for quite as long.

Funnily enough Punkin had just shed yesterday evening, so I suppose, cheered up in his new comfy skin, was suddenly filled with the 'joys of spring'.....
he's only missing alternate meals so far, since about the middle of january, so I'm still getting a good amount of food down him. I'm managing to not get so stressed on that score.

@Bauldy-

pic here of 'unconventional' double decker maisonette viv.... a box of jaffa cakes if you can guess what we used to make the 'vents'..... (silver thing at the right)...

The pale-coloured filling in the enormous gap is a piece of weird spongy fake-wood stuff from my son's construction toys. its a half inch square x the length of the door. I now can't open the left hand door, so it's only a temporary solution.

the guilty party....

Off the top of my dome I can think of two three four possibilities to seal the gap and still allow the doors to be opened.

1. A strip of lino or semi-rigid rubber material fixed along the bottom of the shelf. If you make it so that it projects about 1 to 1.5 inches then it should form a nicely rounded 'snake excluder'. Make it either the full length of the shelf or at least long enough to cover the door overlap. That will allow both doors to be opened.

2. Second idea is a strip of hardboard or foamboard (my favourite snake furniture material) again fitted to the bottom of the shelf. Instead of fixing it permanently, make a couple of slots and attach with a couple of wing-nuts.
It would only need to be as long as the 1/2" gap.
To seal, you would partially close the door and push the strip forward against the glass. (Sliding fit but not jammed.)
Reach in and tighten the wing nuts and fully close the door.

3. Probably this is the simplest and easiest.
Two straps of wood. One piece to fit in the gap, another wider piece attached to sit on top face of shelf. It would make a face down "L" shape. Make it just tight enough to jam between the door and right hand side, still a sliding fit between shelf and glass. Pop it in and shut door. Open door and pop it out.

4. Same idea as above but made from another couple of chunks of that foam or foam for the front and strap to sit on top of shelf.

I'd hazard a guess that you are using Auld Baldy approved 12 year old Islay Malt ventilators. So send me the Jaffa Cakes but don't tell Graeme.

The bum end looks just like she could be Mrs. Taggart.

PS. If you don't fully understand, I'll post a diagram.

aha- the 'L' shape plan using the foamy weird stuff is how I'm going to go, I think- thanks for that
He might even have a bigger bit so I could cut the L shape out, rather than sticking 2 bits together...

the lino plan- do you mean sort of curved round, so it would spring backwards if the door pushed against it?, not sure lino would be boingy enough, wouldn't it crack? or maybe I misunderstood that one..?

sorry, but no jaffa cakes, its made out of those things you put in your plughole to stop bits going down the drain, six for a quid from the local tat-shop. Big hole through the wood, one drain thingy each side.
We've only got ardbeg in the house right now and it's in a squared box, not a tube with a useful lid. I'll have to go shopping, I spose, in case the resident tinker finds me another fab glass fronted bookcase vivarium languishing in a charity shop, cos I've used all the drain thingies on three vents in the maisonette...

ps- The Bad Boy has been skulking in a hide since his adventure, I don't think he's hurt, he was waggling about okay when I got him out, I think he's just embarrassed
