Hey all, just figured I'd share this with you!
I'd been after a big bag of Aubiose, but it's like golddust down here in devon. However, I was at my Grandparents today, when the conversation moved onto it, and Grampy mentioned the 'Elephant Grass' he kept his budgies on. We went to have to a look at the bag of it in the garage, and it looked fine to me, like Aubiose but courser. Some googling and phonecalls and I was pretty happy that this stuff is safe to use. It even has a few people on... -shudder- the darkside using it, so I figured if they'll use it, it must be okay!

Anyway, it's Miscanthus 'Elephant Grass' by Fennington Feeds, and I don't know how far a field you can get it, as this one is produced by a localish farm (Taunton), but I picked the bag up for £7.50 from a nearby farmshop, and here's my Opinion on it!

Big Ol' bag in my messy cupboard!

What it looks like up close.

It looks great!

Seems to have Rimmers Approval!

Bonus blurry photo!

It's a nice looking substrate, and much much more dust free than aspen. It is a little courser, but during digging my hand about in the bag to scoop it up, I didn't get scratched at all, so you can be sure it's not too sharp. It has larger bits in it like 2" long bits of stalk, but the pieces are mostly small chopped matter. I've put 5/7 corns on it, and they all dove straight in for a good old dig, so it gets that approval.
I wouldn't use it on small/young corns, because of it being a bit pokey, but yearlings up seem fine on it, and my adult is certainly enjoying it, it's actually distracted him a little from the laydeeees.

So yeah, good alternative to Aubiose if you can't get your mitts on it, but I'm unsure of where else it's available, what other brands sell it, and whether Fennington Feeds only distribute it within Devon or further afield!

You can certainly get it in the midlands if you try, not come across it stocked in any equine stores by me, but is produced somewhere near Rugely in Staffordshire

Would need to check if anything added to it, lots of equine bedding seems to have either citronella or eucalyptus added.
Google Miscanthus bedding and can find loads, alot do appear to be down south
I can get aubiose or megazorb very local but always looking for cheaper alternatives to bed my horse on that I could also use for my snakes

Yeah, that was my main trouble down here, at lot of suitable stuff was pumped full of citronella and stuff! But this stuff is 100% no chemicals, just chopped Miscanthus! Glad I found it, buying Aspen in bulk amount to £30 down here, and buying 26ltr bags was still costing me £10 a go, and was only lasting one one round of cleanouts!
