Hi all.

I'm about to take my corn to a vet for the first time since owning her. (Owned her for just over a year)

I dont think its serious and to be honest it may not be anything at all, it could be part of the fuzzy. The story is, i leave her alone all day until around 5pm when i handle her or feed her and i didnt notice anything at first but when she finished eating it looked like she had a big broken scale on the side of her face. It looked more like a flake. Now this could be just part of the fuzzy as the fuzzys i buy sometimes a foot falls off or part of tail.

I didnt check properly because she was already half way back in her little terranium/viv thingy and heading for her warm house to digest her food so i left her alone.

Anyway... iv booked her in to the vets not just for that reason but just for a general M.O.T lol

How do i take her? because i cant take her heat mat obviously. And should i cover her up so she doesnt accidently see other dogs/cats/etc etc.. in the waiting room?

She just been fed then? A warmish, not boiling hot water bottle if she has just eaten, if not you don't need a heat source really. Just pop her in a tub/rub.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Pop her into an old pillow case and then into a suitable sized plastic container with a lid. It doesn't have to be massive, just secure and with a few ventilation holes in it. A bit of bubble wrap either in or around the tub will give you a bit of extra insulation.

Hope the MOT goes well.

I'd go for the pillow case, inside a tub. There's less chance of getting moved about to much then, the last thing you'd want is the snake to get bounced around to much or for people at the vets to have little hissy fits simply because its a snake.

Just out of interest, are these general check-ups expensive? I would very much like to take Shisha to a vet to have him looked over for the all-clear healthwise (although I'm pretty sure he's a healthy snake), and to have him sexed, but my parents (neither of whom have actually looked into the prices) said that it might be expensive to do so. Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I just figured as you've booked what I'm looking for, you might have an idea! Hope all goes well for your little snakey too! :)

I'm not too sure about other vets but my vets is a standard animal vet with one guy who is good with reptiles so I'm just getting charged a standard check up fee of £30. Which is the same for my dog :)

Ah brilliant, thank you! I was worried it would be a painfully crippling sum, but I can deal with things in that region... *phew* :P

I took my snakes in for a general health check not long after getting them. The vet loves snakes so he didn't charge me a penny, though I was expecting about £30. Was very happy. He wants me to go back just to see them as since moving to the area he hasn't seen a lot of snakes >.> Ah well.. free health check makes it all good :D

Don't know if you've taken your corn yet, but when mine go on outings they just get popped in tubs, no heat or anything, just a blanket to pad them in if they're riding in my motorcycle topbox.

nope havnt taken her yet, her appointment is monday. The receptionist said "we dont have a reptile specialist but we do have a vet who takes a keen interest in snakes" so im going to take her to him and if im not happy ill find another vet. But the only real reptile vet near me is over 35 miles away.

To be honest I wouldnt worry about taking them for a check up unless they really need it. I have only had 2 of mine at the vets, one to get a kink checked out when i first got him and one for an egg laying problem. It is worthwhile having a good look round for rep vets in your area though just in case you need one in an emergency. I have got a list of 4 vets that will deal with reps that I can contact if I need to. I think the consultation fee for my visits was £25 which I thought was reasonable.
