Hey, As You Know Im New To Owning A Snake, And I Have A Few Questions, Please Go Easy On Me Lol I Think Sammy Is A Female But I Wont Be Confirming That For Myself! Dont Want To Hurt My Baba Lol! First Of All She Is In A 2ft Viv And When I Put Her Back In Her Viv Earlier I Estimated That She Is Around 1ft And A Half Long, Is That Good Considering She Is Only Around 3months Old? (The Guy We Got Her From Didn't Seem To Have Much Of An Idea) Secondly Since I Put Her In Her New Viv She Has Constantly Been In The Hide On Her Warm Side Is This Considered Normal? To Be Honest I Put It Down To Her Warming Up As When We Got Her She Was Kept In A Plastic Box With No Form Of Heating. And Finally, I Was Told To Feed Her Twice A Week, I Fed Her On Saturday And She Still Hasnt Poo'd Since Then? And If I Am To Leave It 48 Hours Before Handling Her Then That Would Leave About Two Days A Week To Handle Is This Right? By The Way I Got Her Thursday 12th Jan, Sorry For Such A Long Post!! Remember Go Easy On Me Lol!!xxx

OK feeding first. You wouldn't want to be feeding her more than every 5 days but once a week has worked well for me. Feeding twice a week is power feeding and not recommended.

Her size for age is fine as there is such a variance in size that anything from 11 inches 2 foot is normal (though 2 foot would be huge).

Its normal for a new snake to hide but just to check the vivarium you have set up I have a few questions for you;

*How are you heating your vivarium?
*How are you measuring the temperature?
*Are you using a thermostat?
*How many hides do you have?
*Is there any decor in the vivarium (foliage etc)?
*Have you escape proofed the vivarium?

Sexing a snake doesn't hurt them when its done properly by someone who knows what they are doing.

Ah Thank You, we have a heat mat, from a local reptile shop, we have a 'dial' thermometer placed about an inch above the heat mat to give a better reading, we havent managed to get hold of a thermostat yet but i have been regularly checking the temps, there are two hides, one on the warm side and one on the cool, yes she has a 'rough' vine which helps with shedding and i am picking up some 'plants' to go at the back for her soon as the two i got with the viv where quite honestly disgusting covered in cr@p and the previous owner of the viv had a few snakes and reptiles die so didnt want to risk the chance of infection, and yes it is escape proof...not that she goes anywhere lol! hope this helps x

OK firstly the heat mat without a thermostat inside a vivarium is very dangerous and I would recommend switching it off until you have a thermostat. What size/wattage is the heat mat because I would have thought the mat would be already running too hot and the snake should have moved to the cold side by now. Have you seen her explore at all. The new big vivarium can be scary for a hatchling which is why it needs loads of cover to move about and feel secure. The dial thermometers are totally useless in a set up using a heat mat, the mats are contact heaters, they barely heat the air at all so the thermometer is measuring how hot or cold your room is and not the heat source at all.

It is very common for shops to sell the set up you have got which is unfortunate for newbies who suddenly find themselves with a load more money to spend to put the vivarium right.

You can and probably should switch off the heat mat now, dont feed the snake until the mat is back on with a thermostat, you need a digital thermometer with a probe to accurately measure the heat of the mat, the air temperature will just be room temperature so dont worry about that and plenty of plants etc to pack out the big empty space of a vivarium. Even chop cardboard tubes (toilet roll, kitchen roll) in half long ways they provide perfect hiding spots for little snakes.

I have one of those mats, exactly the same one. I tested it without a stat and it hit nearly 40oC. I've seen this without a stat info on heat mats before but its really not a good idea and for the cost of a stat (£25 TOPS) its not worth the risk.
