I was changing my snakes water today and noticed a small black thing floating in the water, could this be mites ?

if its just one an no sign of anymore i wouldnt worry, just keep an eye on snake for a week or so.

Bits of dust and crud do float into the bowl, as A33272 said, just keep an eyeball on the water and your snake for a while.

Supposedly Mites shouldn't float.
