hey guys, just bought a 40w bulb and spotlamp fitting, just to use for light rather than heat, how would i go about attaching this and the light guard?

You can't is the short answer. A 40 Watt bulb will still heat the vivarium, so is still a heat source and would need a thermostat. All bulbs need a guard too, snakes are strong and grip things that they climb, you wouldn't want to be picking bits of glass out of your snake's belly.
To avoid the heat issue and the need for a thermostat use a LED bulb or energy saving bulb, these give off minimal heat but still need guarding.
As for the method of fitting it then wiring it in and then screwing it to the roof is a good place to start. |

| I used a 7 watt energy saving bulb, and found it easier to fit the bulb guard by turning the viv on it's side, makes it a lot easier to get the scews into the wood...do make sure there's nothing in the viv at the time, and you've removed the glass ;-) |
