Hi,

I have just been given a 5 year old corn snake by a work colleague, it seems very healthy and happy but i would like to make some changes to its vivarium and would like some advice,

At present it has a working heat mat and a heat lamp, which has not been used for some time and does not currently work.my questions are;

1 should i get the heat lamp working and if so does it affect the usage of the heat mat in any way (i.e should i turn off 1 when the other is in use)

2 is it o.k to fit a small flourescent strip light in the vivarium in order to see the snake better or would some other light source be more appropriate?

Thanks in advance for your help

Lee

heya and welcome

ditch the heat lamp
forget the UV, small LED lights are much better for snakes' health
buy a thermostat to control the heatmat

Hi and welcome

First things first buy yourself a mat statand discard the heat lamp you dont need one the mat will be fine by itself (but you will need a stat!)
If you want to add lighting probably best to use led strip lights they barely give off any heat and wont pose a burn risk to the snake

Best of luck

As others have said. Get a Mat Stat, ditch the UV light and use LED's for lighting. These from ikea are ideal.

Wow, That was fast,

Thanks guys, i will take your advice, I am considering buying an all glass vivarium to replace the melamine one that i have been given, are there any issues with this idea that i should be aware of? will the snake be happy in it ?

Is it a purpose built glass reptile viv or a converted fish tank? It a fish tank secruing the lid is a priority as too is adequate ventilation.

glass viv get damn cold in winter, too hot in summer (ambient temps) and unless you cover them on 3 sides snakes often feel very exposed
my preference is melamine/contiboard/wooden vivs to maintain more stable temps and help keep the snake feeling more secure meaning you're less likely to have feeding issues

Hi and welcome, i have both types of tank - think the glass is nice for us to view but feel the snakes are happier in the more closed tank. Going to be coverin the back and side of my glass tank with climbing wall.

Thanks for that, great to get some good advice from someone who has experience. I think I may still gor for a glass viv but do the same as you with the climbing wall as i think it will look much better and give my snake a bit of interest too.
