I've noodled about online and everywhere seems to have conflicting advice, so I wondered if anyone here could shed any light on this?
I've just bought a new (higher wattage) heat mat and a mat stat as the temps were fluctuating with our old mat.
However, I'm a bit confused about where to put the mat stat temp probe - some guides say it should go inside the tank on top of the substrate (so it's measuring the temp the snake receives), where others say it should go under the tank on top of the heat mat (but with the mat stat set to a higher temp to allow for heat loss at the substrate).
Any pro's / cons for either method? I suppose if the probe is outside the tank then you don't have a wire coming down into the tank, other than that, I need advice!
Cheers

It doesn't really matter, however, you will have to have a thermometer on the substrate to check that you are getting the right temperature either way. Don't trust the temperature shown on the Stat. |

ontop of substrate above mat is best as that swhere snakey will be in contact with, id go against whats said about under tank ontop of mat with thermostat set higher as how can you judge how much heat ya going to loose thru the substrate |

Thanks for the info. It does make sense reading from the substrate.
What do you do about the wire though? Can I just tape it to the side of the tank? Will I have to cut a hole in the lid for it to come through? The viv is a snake starter kit - plastic lid with vents and small clear covers but not enough room for the wire to go through - is it safe to cut a bit out of it?
The stat says it's accurate to +- 1c but I'll take that with a pinch of salt... |

If its like mine, an exo terra flat faun, then there is a round hole in one of the corners of the top, I just made that a bit bigger with some pliers to feed my sensors for my stat and thermometer. As long as the cables take up most of the room in the hole it should be fine. Seal it from the outside with some sellotape if necessary, just make sure snakey can't touch the tape and get stuck. |

i drilled a hole in my tub that was about the same height my substrate is an the hole is just big enough to get the stat probe through then the thermometer probe aswell, that way there isnt a cable running down inside it just sticks in through a hole a few inches |

I picked up a digital thermometer so am still tweaking the temps to get them 'right'...
I've got the temp and stat probes actually in/on the substrate - is that the right place? A pic might show it better:
Here's the little fellah:
He is supposed to be about 6 months old but we've since seen hatchlings in a different reptile store that are bigger than him! The guy said it sounds like he never took to eating well and more or less starved until we bought him :( Luckily after his regurge he seems to have kept his meals down with us.
This is his home:
He can be often seen curled in the fake plant, or hiding under the water bowl or cork wood...
Cheers
