I'd get a Mat Stat to be honest. It does what it needs to and is cheap enough. With this current heatwave you snake will be fine with out the heat mat being on. Its better to be safe than sorry. Just dont feed it until you have a stat and the temperature is stabilised.

I really wouldnt worry about not feeding her. That is a much better option than a regurge or burns which would be your other possible outcomes. The mat stat and temperature stat do pretty much the same thing. They are both on/off stats that allow the heatmat to heat up to the set temperature then turns off the mat until it has dropped a couple of degrees and then turns on again. I think the temperature stat can be used with a higher wattage device than the mat stat which is why it is a bit more expensive. The basic mat stat is perfectly fine for heatmats. I have several.

Hi, a mat stat is just for controlling a heat mat, a temp stat can control different low powered heaters. Agree with Simmy regarding the mat stat.

with the outside temperatures being so high at the moment I really wouldn't worry about having the mat on at all. I checked mine last night around 11pm and the stat still had the power off to the heaters
