That's a big difference in temps for a stat, I use the habistat matstat ones and it's never more than 1 degree either way so their good, not used any others so can't help more sorry

With a Habistatt Mat Stat you will never get it to stay at a constant temperature. Mine fluctuates between 28 and 29.5.

I got this from an old thread. Hope it helps...

MAT STAT is cheap an basic can only be used with mat. does the job but sometimes has a few degrees variation in temp so hot end will run say between 27-29 degrees. is ideal for bigginers.

PULSE STAT. can be used on mats an ceramic heaters. holds a very accurate temperature often no more that .5 degree fluctuation. but is expensive.

DIMMING STAT. used for ceramic heaters an bulbs. again expensive wont work with mats to good as needs a certain level of load to operate.

all u need is a mat stat there usually more that half the price of the others

A habistat mat stat is plenty good enough for corns. Microclimates are ok too but they generally give a wider swing than habistats. My microclimate swings between 26-32, while my habistats normally run between about 27.5-29.5.

I know dimming stats are supposed to be for light bulbs, but I found my habistat dimmer incredibly good at maintaining balanced heat, dont think it really went more than 0.5C out!

I have 8 heat mats all running off Habistat matstats and have no problems. I get approx a 2 degree fluctuation at most.

I use pulse stats, microclimate ministats, dimmers and habistats.
Although the temp swing is a little greater with a microclimate, it still does the job of stopping the mats overheating so that's good enough for me.
None of them let the temps drop to low, yet all stop them getting to high.

im just not happy with the fluctuations

id rather pay that little bit more and snakey to be happy

could the problem be because say i have the thermostat set to exactly 30 degrees, the thermostat knocks itself on and heats to full temperature but because the heat inside the RUB is slightly behind, the sensor inside will detect 30 degrees and knock the thermostat off but for another minutes the mat is still heating up causing the fluctuation. Same for when the heat drops, the temp inside will rapidly drop due to coldness from the room and ny the time the thermostat kicks in the temp has dropped a little more?

Your snake will be happy with those fluctuations. As long as it doesnt drop too much below 26 you'll be fine, the mat stat will stop it getting to high.

EDIT: If you room is fairly cold that could be whats casuing it. Especially with the heat dropping so quickly. You will be fine with the mat stat, and once your heating comes on for winter you will see it begin t steady out. Mine heats to 29.5, but my mat stat reads 27.

Its currently in the front room which is empty and bare plaster on the walls (currently decorating) so possibly why. I just want it to be perfect :)

I'd wait til you room is ready and lived in again. Once the room is heated as normal then see how the stat is performing before going and buying a new one. The temps its fluctating between are fine, I can understand your worry but it will steady out to 1/2 degree changes which is fine. Its not a constant temperature in the wild.

I think so too. I was the same not long ago when i first got mine. It takes a while for the temp to stabilise. I was tinkering with mine for a week or too.

Honestly, stop fretting so.

Corns are hardy snakes and will cope quite happily with the equipment you already have. Even if you had a lengthy power cut in the dead of winter, your snake would get through it. Heat is important for digestion, but other than that it's not an overly worrying issue. The majority of my snakes seem to spend a lot more of their time in the cool hide than they do the warm one. It used to bother me, but they know what they want a lot more than I do and they're all doing fine.

Like Kehhlyr said, as long as your stat stops the mat from overheating, it's doing its job.

Corns: 1.1 Anery, 1.1 Butter, 1.0 Carolina, 0.1 Hypo, 1.1 Snow, 1.0 Sunkissed
Boas: 0.1 Arabesque, 1.0 Brazilian Rainbow, 0.1 Crawl Cay, 1.1 Hogg Island X, 0.1 Hypo Hogg, 0.1 Kahl Albino (poss coral)
