I have a vivexotic arriving tomorrow and wondered is someone could help with a few questions I know the heatmat goes in the tank, do I need to cover it with a tile or something? I have a habistat mat stat, but not sure if he could still get burned? Also, never having a wooden viv before will there be holes for the wires, or do they go through the large vents with the metal covers? Thanks |

| Hi I have th same viv and have the heat mat outside under the viv itself with a poly tile under Neath, it will take longer for the vic to heat up but safer for the snake, in the vic on the warm Side do not place more than an inch of substrate as this will not allow for the heT to rise above, and yea you have some small oval holes in the top corners for leads to be pushed threw, hope this helps and sum may tell you different way!! |

| heat mat inside, having it outside will mean they mat will have to be running nearly flat out all the time as wood is an insulator!! a mat run on a stat inside is proberly less dangerous than having the mat outside the viv running flat out all the time potentially causing fire hazard. with mat on outside the inside of the viv will still have to reach the same as what the mat would if in side the viv. my mat is inside an the stat an thermometer probes are stuck on using hot glue gun or silicone so they cant be moved by snake. |

| Ok I will move mine in the viv but what about geting wet if the snake does it's bizz on the mat, I know they are lamanated but still run the risk of electric shocks or is that my health and safety side speaking lol. |

I've used a bit of lino right over my mats in the past.
The laminated bit is fine, it's the cable connector bit that could cause issues.
However corn poo isn't as much as lets say a boa or royal poo so should be ok.
With the vivexotics viv, if you put the back on upside down as well, so the holes are at the bottom the cables will have a greater reach on them and be easier to place, just remember to fill the excess holes with sealant or similar to stop escapes. |

Thanks everyone, it's hard to know where everything should go when you haven't seen the viv built:-) Thanks for the tip Kehhlyr, I'll pass it on to my Husband who's already been warned he'll be building the viv :-). So the heatmat doesn't need covered by anything other than a hide then?
I've just thought of something else too, where and at what point building the tank do you put the silicone on? Does it go all over the inside including the joints? Thanks again. |

| on the DIY side of things, maplins sell rubber grommets of various dimensions which are perfect for feeding cables through. they seal the hole nicely and look neat and tidy. just be sure to get the right size and depth for the viv wall. |

hi hissyfit, when the carcass construction is complete and at least a couple of days before the furniture & snakey move in is the time to get the silicone gun out! inside only, dont do the outside. use an applicator (mastik gun from £1 land)! the neater the seal, the more hygenic and easier to clean. all static inside joints should be done (i.e oviously dont do doors or removeable partitions). there is a good active thread in the DIY section regarding silicone sealents.
