Hi guys,
I am completely new to this so please bear with me,having been a marine fishkeeper for a number of years I feel I have a good home for my prospective first corn snake... A 3' long,1'deep,1.5'wide tank. Firstly, does this sound reasonable? I plan on having half the floor area heated,do I need a thermostat to regulate the heat mat or are they set to reach and maintain the correct temp? I have a 2x t8 light fixture to view the corn,2 hides one at either end and aspen chippings as a substrate.how am I doing? I've seen a beautiful snake that I'm interested in, about 16" long with great colouration. Have I covered the initial stages to house this safely and succesfully? Any replies greatly appreciated. Matt.

hi and welcome, i would definately use a heatmat as they can get to too high temperatures very quickly and you don't want to end up with a burnt snake

Hiya and welcome. It sounds like you are doing great. A couple of things: Make sure the lid for the tank is secure as corns have been known to push them off, A thermostat is an essential piece of kit as heatmats can get up to very high temperatures and cause some nasty burns, You will need at least 1 digital thermometer to check the temperature of the heatmat as the dials on the stats can be a little out, If you are housing a small snake in a larger tank then make sure it is filled with lots of places to hide and fake plants for coverage so that the snake feels secure. Usually it is recommended to house a young snake in a smaller enclosure so that they feel secure although some manage fine in a larger tank

Thanks guys for so quick replies, I've obviously already got vivarium so I'm thinking of eventual size! How quick do corns grow?is my viv too big for an 18" snake?
