Hello!
I haven't yet got a snake but am intending to get a corn hatchling in about a month or so (go on holiday before then so don't want to get one then abandon it for a couple of weeks!)
But to make the waiting easier, I have scoured the forum (and others ) and have got together what I hope is a decent little setup. Constructive comments are very welcome!
Here it is:

(The snake is obviously just a temporary one!!!)
The terrarium is the same dimensions as a Large Flat Faunarium, I felt I would just upgrade a bit - I see from discussions on another thread that I may have to be careful when opening the lid with a speedy escape artist hatchling... The heat mat just slides in between 2 pieces of glass under the floor. I have a MatStat and a thermometer and will probably fix the probes down in the terrarium with some aquarium sealant as well as weighting them down with a hide.
There are two hides, one is a snake cave - I am not sure whether this may be a bit big but I can always find a flowerpot or plastic tub to replace it until the snake gets a bit bigger. I also have a medium water dish, and a smallish piece of mopani wood (a bit hidden in the middle of the terrarium) from Dunelm Mill (bargain at £1.99 ) as well as a small fake plant.
I got everything except the mopani wood from Blue Lizard Reptiles and on this experience would definitely recommend them - speedy delivery and good prices (everything here as well as 100 ml F10 disinfectant concentrate and some aspen came to under £100, with free postage since order was over £50).
Well I hope this setup looks reasonably OK but I welcome any comments (but please be nice to me ). I can't wait now to get its inhabitant but will have to satisfy myself for now with drooling over everyone else's lovely animals

Looks really nice sue only thing is you must bear in mind ultimately the snakes potential length and the vivs height and length should be eqaul to that (from what ive read on here) Should last a hatchling a good long while though just make sure the plug even the smallest of holes lol Also you might wanna buy another digital thermometer so you have one each end noticed your vivs in front of the radiator that could cause you a lot of problems when its switched on with temp fluctuations |

Length+width. The height isn't as important because they're primarily ground dwelling. |

Hatchlings are quick but they wont escape as you lift the lid, to start they are more likely to hide and scourer away to their favourite hide, just be a bit alert The set up looks very nice i must say |

Thanks folks!
I am planning to upgrade to a bigger viv once snakey outgrows this one, that will leave this one free for any possible new addition
Good point about the radiator, but it's not as near as it looks - there is over a foot of space between the radiator and the viv - and the central heating is off until winter bites and then set pretty low (we're northern cheapskates and have plenty of woolly jumpers...). The thermometer is a Lucky Reptile one with two probes, so the second probe is in the cool end - once the central heating does get switched on I will keep an extra close eye on the temps until happy it's all stable.
WRT escape holes - are the white round plastic ventilation areas on the sides safe or are there any scare stories about hatchlings getting through them? They look safe enough but I have seen pics on here of snakes getting through weeny gaps so just wanted to pick your collective brains!
Thanks again,

It looks very nice to me. I have one of these terrainiums that mine was in until his bigboy house arrived and they are very secure. One word of advice is to not put a large amount of water in there as they tend to get very humid so make sure you keep an eye on that. Im keeping mine ready for a hatchy for my son on his birthday. |

I think that looks great. I really love the look of that terranium instead of the fauns. I think the lift up lid is great as it must be much easier to look for a hatchling with a full opening lid rather than a fauns small access panels. I would just be aware of the snake trying to push the lid up, I don't know how heavy it is and if a hatchling would be able to lift it but it could be a possible escape route. The vents on the sides should be fine if the are pushed in from the inside but I have all mine siliconed in place anyway as someone (I can't remember who) had one of their snakes lever one out and escape. I regards to the snake cave, it may be a bit big but you could fill it halfway with aspen or put some scrunched up newspaper in it to make it seem more cosy. |
