Hi guys this will likely be another stupid question from me but here goes.
My new stat arrived today so i set it all up and left it for a while to see what temperature itd get too (i set the dial at 31 theres no 30 on it) temperature seems to be a lil higher than 31 though im not expecting it to be precise (i assume theres bound to be some leway between the stats probe and also my digital thermometers probes) just wondering if maybe i should move the probes they are about 4-5 inchs from the base of the viv.
The heat mat is under the bottom of the viv how long should i leave it between checks ? at the mo im nipping into the bedroom every half an hour to adjust it accordingly till i can get it sat at 30 silly thing is ive had a constant temperature for the last 4 days with a broken stat go figure lol obviously it had to be replaced though.
Also will the up and down temperatures bother Eddie much hes due a feed tomorrow ?

what type of stat is it?
but regardless of type you want the stat and therm probes in the same place on top of the substrate above the heat source
when you're setting things up adjust the stat according to the temp showing on the thermometer not the digits on the stat dial
you want to aim for about 28-29*C though you may get more variation with an on/off stat |

do they not want to be under the substrate because if the snake burrows which is likely then it will be exposed to a higher temp than what is reading on the probe and thermometer? i have a 5 degree difference with only 5-10mm of aspen bedding depending weather probes are on top or touching the bottom of the faun.
(just repeating advice i was given here by another expierienced member) |

Thanks gingerpony its a microclimate international ministat 100 (for use with heatmats up to 100 watts) its an on /off switching thermostat is this a bad thing ? its all i could afford at the time i just didnt wanna risk using the faulty one for longer than i had too its brand new though with a 5 year warranty which appealed to me i have a terrible habit of buying stuff that seems to go kaput just outside of the warranty period lol.
Atm eddies just in a rub on kitchen towel so would would it be accurate placing the probes outside the rub will there be much variation

| If he is in a rub, what I would do is put the thermostat probe directly on the heatmat and the thermometer probe inside the rub on the base above the heatmat. I have just upgraded my hoggies to a bigger faun and it has taken 3 days for the temperatures to stabalise. I would turn the stat down to about 27 and leave it for a few hours and then turn it up very gradually as it needs it. And to be honest I would probably avoid feeding for a couple of days while you sort things out. It wont hurt the snakie and it will be one less thing to worry about if you have trouble with the temperatures. |

| okies thanks its been stable for a while at around 31.6 i may turn it down a weeny bit but its taken me all day to get it to stay put so im loathe to touch it again lol i dont care how long it takes me to get it right as long as eddies happy at least i now have the peace of mind that comes with a working stat lol |

| 31.6 is too high, 30 is really the highest you want it to be, and for some even that is a bit too hot. It's best to try and get the thermostat set so that 28 degrees is about midpoint of the temperature fluctuation. I have a mat stat and a pulse stat, the mat stat tends to keep the mat 27.6-28.8 degrees. |

| rightyo i shall turn it down a teeny tiny bit and see what happens to the temp them its such a small dial the smallest movement seems to make a vast diffrence in temp though i suppose once its set ill never have to change it again lol |

| Notched the stat down its consistently stayed at 29.1 now overnight is that ok or do i need to adjust it a teeny bit more ? |

| 29.1 is good. Mine is varying around that temp too. Tho i get a few degree changes. Im a constantly adjusting my stat, think its due to the fact that the snake keeps moving the probes. |

on/off stats are fine for corns but the temps are more likely to fluctuate slightly due to the design of on/offs
i'd recommend putting such a thin covering of substrate over the mat that it doesn't really matter if the stat/therm probes are on top |
