I joined this site a while back after rescuing Reggie from a lack of love, attention and cleanliness. He's now happy in a new viv and getting used to being handled regularly and I have to say this site has been great for me getting advise. I feed him once a week at the moment however am confused by the advice of a mouse being one and a half times the size of the snakes head. Please can someone advise if this is referring to the length of the mouses body to the width of the snakes head? I cannot say how old Reggie is as he came without care sheets, however he is just over 3ft long and I have him on medium sized pinkies but am concerned these are too small after looking at the video of a corn being fed.....can anyone advise please? I don't want him to starve!!!

At 3' long pinkies are far too small, I would say he should be on small mice at the very least. My amel is just under 3' and can happily take medium mice.

The rule is that the WIDTH of the mouse should be no more than 1 and 1/2 times the widest part of the snakes body (not the head).

Thanks Thistle - that helps a lot. I'm going to move him on to small mice then and see how he goes. Thanks for posting back so quickly :)

At 3ft he should be on small at least, going onto mediums. You may need to feed a few fuzzies first as pinky to a small mouse could be quite a big jump for his stomach!

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

Thanks for your help on that people. Reggie is now on small mice soon to be mediums. I did feed a couple of fuzzies first to gradually increase the size and to get his stomach used to it. He seems much happier now. Once again I am grateful

On the subject of mouse size it obvious, but took me a while to notice, that mice are squishy. So when they get eaten a snakes mouth doesn't have to open to the width of the mouse's middle. As the mouse goes down it seems to get squashed and elongated as it goes.
