My daughter has only had her snake 5 days and I've had an ebay Habistat Mat Stat arrive today. The snake is in an exo tera terrarium with the heat mat(7W) under the glass, not inside the tank. I'm not sure how to fit the mat stat.Would the probe need to be in the tank, or can I put it underneath with the heat mat? Also, there's another separate cable in the box with a plug and small black connection adaptor type thing, what is that for? Thanks for any pointers, I didn't expect it to be quite so complicated

first you need the probe inside the box (attach to the thermometer probe) i normally do this with a elastic band, as this will give you a more accurate temp control, the plug is for plugging into the mains and there should be a socket for the mat to be plugged into, this is so that when the temp gets too hot the stat can cut the power to the mat thus cooling the temp down and vice versa, hope this helps

you can have the probe either directly on the mat ouside the viv or inside the viv on top of the substrate. either way you need to set the dial according to what the thermometer inside the viv reads. the thermometer or it's probe should be on the substrate above the heatmat.

with the stat itself it will have 3 cables, one is the probe (the cable without a plug or socket attached), one is the plug that you plug into the wall socket and the last one is a socket that you plug the mat into - it will prolly make more sense when you have it all in front of you

oh, and it's normal for an on/off type stat like the MatStat to fluctuate slightly in temps so don't panic as long as the temps are in range 27-30*C
if the snake spands most of it's time in the cool end then turn the stat down a bit

Thank you both that's great. I'm so relieved it doesn't have to go in the viv, just had a look and the vents are too small to fit the probe! I did manage to figure out what the 3 cables are for, but there's still an extra bit not attached to the rest, so maybe it's not actually part of it? Thanks for the tip on the thermometer, I have 2 stick on type and put them in the wrong place, so have bought a decent digital one and at least I now know where to put it
