Hi,
my corns viv has always had a humidity level of around 40-60%, but recently, whilst she was in shed, it has shot up to around 80%. This I know is higher than recommended, but is it dangerous, and why has it happened?

| Lol na I dont use a heat mat, I've left the door open for a bit so its gone down to 70% now, so were getting there! |

| lol im sure he/she left door open while watching or handling, they hardly gunna leave door open n go out to work lol. :) and im guessing light for heat (which is wrong and he/she is about to learn that :P) you need to get a mat for a snake, im a rookie so maybe wrong but i think the only take heat in from thier bellys? |

I've been sat watching my snake with the door open trying to convince him to come out on his own to my hand (bit hissy when scooping up) and turned my head for 30 secs and when I turned back round he was halfway out of the viv slithering away..
Fowler - I apologise if I've come across harshly - not my intention at all but with snakes leaving the viv door open even when supervised can be risky |

Huh, I read somewhere that it doesn't really matter what you use for heating, as long as its not from a heat rock and stuff like that. Personally, I use a heat lamp (one resembeling the sun while the other is a infrared for nighttime) and my corn snake is perfectly fine. So I don't necesarrily believe you "HAVE" to use a heat mat :/...
@fowler: That is above the "normal" level for shedding purposes. The evaporated water from the water bowl and misting the cage should give proper humidity for shedding. Hope I helped :). |

If you beleive that then you will be in for a surprise! one thing to remember, never under estimate stupid people!
( i in no way am accusing the poster of being stupid, unless you did actually go to work and leave the viv open!)
Humidity wise, dont worry about it, it will go back to normal quickly, a little rise in humididty whilst in shed isnt gonna do them any harm.
Heat wise, there is no specific right way and wrong way to do it, as long as they get the right temps and the heat source is statted.
Heat bulbs can be used, if you want to keep it au naturel, then heat mats are the way forward, but thats a choice.
Personally, i use mats for everything other than the boas, i would rather have a 20 watt heatmat on 50% of the time, than have a 60w bulb on 50% of the time. |
