Can anyone tell me if Rat and Goffer snakes are good snakes to have for a lass like who's just starting out with snakes. Also, do you know where I could read up on their care requirements. |
Dakota ~ Bloodred Corn ~ Amber & Chloe ~ Cats Mind is changing on snakes I want now lol so am researching these to find out what would be best - Milk Snakes and Dwarf Boa possibly - Crawl Cay, Sonoran, Tarahumara or Vera Cruz and poss a Hoggie, African House and Rat snake. Also Trinket Snakes. |

I don't know much about them but I think both rats and Gopher snakes has a reputation for being grumpy! Not sure how true that is though.
I think they grow bigger than corns too. |

they are a bit bigger than 6ft lol, more like 7-9ft, and they can have a nasty reputation, but like any snake would calm down with handling, although as babies tend to be very noisey and agressive, but it depends on the snake

Danny I'm reading that the Bull Snake grows to an average length of 6 feet but has been known to exceed this by 2 -3 feet, will that be the same for Pine and Gophers too?
I just googled pine/bull/gopher snakes and looked at first one that came up http://www.lihs.org/files/caresheets/Pituophis.htm but will check out Wiki too. Am only at the research stage Danny so it's not set in stone |

Rat snake requirements are very similar to corns they just get bigger normally. They potentially can be nippy but what snake cant, our 2 black rats are very handleable and havent struck out or bitten yet. |

from what i now it is, it is like corns, corns have the same requirements as kings and milks, and bulls are in the same family as pines and gophers, so i would guess about a year ago we had a huge female bull snake in the shop i used the voulenteer at, was a huge 10ft full of attitude, put me right off them, then we got some babies in and they were so small and a delite to handle, so it is all on the snake, but the guy that owned the shop sed he had never seen a bull snake that big before edit: i dont know where you have got you info from about bull snakes being 6ft, go on wiki and type bull snakes in, they give you a goo description of them

for 'ratsnakes' it all depends which species you get, theres loads of them! New world rats are similar to care for to corns, the obsoleta genus maybe growing a little larger. Old world rats seem to need a bit more 'specialised' care, just stick in the scientific name to google and see what comes up. |
