Hey all, i always thought u put the heat mat under the viv, but i have seen a few pics of people with them in their vivs. I always thought it was the outside. My viv is wooden and i have the heat mat underneath, my other viv is all glass exo terra. I know the heat mat is ok under the exo terra one because it goes through glass easy....but what about my wooden viv??......cheers!!! |

mats inside for wooden vivs, they will never get enough heat to penetrate the wooden base otherwise. |

What Gmac said, but I also recommend putting a polystyrene tile under your glass viv and on top of the heat mat to aid in heat distribution, as glass is a relatively poor conductor of heat it can be hard to achieve a good gradient with the mat directly under the glass. |

Surely the polystyrene tile would insulate the heat away from the tank if its on top of the heat mat. I would say you put the tile underneath the heatmat. Thats what I did with mine when I had them under plastic fauns |

I've always found that because of the air spaces in polystyrene it allows heat to be distributed better than it would be in glass. A heatmat on glass, I have found, often causes hotspots because the heat cannot be conducted through glass very easily |
