| Hi, I am a Tarantula fanatic but have just got my first Cornsnake !!!! He's a beautiful grey around 2 feet in length, 18 months old and reasonably friendly!!! I am not scared of my 22 T's but Lozzy my snake freaks me out lol, he will let me handle him on his terms though doesn't take kindly when being approached, any tips? He hasn't eaten in 4 weeks, should I start worrying yet? He has come from a friend so I know he's healthy, his eyes are not cloudy so not sure about a shed yet? He has come out of his hide but mostly lays at the cool end tucked up in a log hide. I have a heat lamp on warm side and a small heat mat underneath on the warm side, should I do away with one of them? The viv is 3 feet long with reptile bark chips and branches with silk leaves, large water feeder and a damp moss container, any ideas on my set up? Thanks x |

In regards to your tarantula, look up a member called Haplopelma, who breeds them and has some
Secondly in regards to the feeding, I wouldn't worry as some corn snakes go a couple of months without eating.
The only issue is if he starts losing weight as a result of it.
Don't offer food on a regular basis if he is refusing as this can cause him to stress out.
Instead wait a week, and then put him and a freshly thawed mouse (that is still warm) in a tub in a warm dark place and leave him for half hour or so, if it's gone, great, if not, wait another week.
As to regards to handling my Bruge used to be snappy, and hiss.
I ran my hands through the aspen daily so she get used to my scent (I washed my hands before hand so the scent stays more or less the same)
when I wanted to handle her, providing not within 48 hours of eating or in the shedding process, I gently guide my hand in low at her height, and just gently scoop her up,
Sometimes she tries darting from me, but just use your other hand to grip firmly but not to cause pain, and just let snakey dart around in your hands etc
If they bite, it is more shock than anything as small snakes can't really pierce skin, but adults might, but it feels much less than a pin *****
If she lays mostly in the cool end that may suggest that the warm end is too warm, so would check your temps and adjust accordingly
I personally just use a heat mat that covers a third of the floor,
and I don't use heat lamps with heat mats, but there are others who do, just as long as temps are right on both sides and the humidity is ok which if you are using damp moss, that should be, but don't forget if it comes into contact with the substrate bark/aspen etc, it can cause bacteria to grow, over time

Hi and welcome. 2 of my snakes are a similar size to yours and they are very happy in their own side of a 3 foot partitioned viv.
Plenty of room for them and it'll do them a while yet. |

Welcome to the forum.
I second all the things other members have said. You asked if your snake might be going to shed because his eyes have gone cloudy....yes cloudy eyes do indicate a shed is about to happen. The eyes will clear and then after a few days you'll have a bright, fresh looking shed snake! |
