Hey everybody,
I'm Jay, and my two ladies are Red (Orange Rat/Corn mix) and Black-jack (Jacky for short.. and so she doesn't get a masculinity complex)
We're in Kent, and the ladies are my second and third corns, my albino male Armand was rehomed several years ago when I was relocated to the USA for 6 years, though I still keep in touch through his facebook page :)
The ladies were rescues, however, sadly the rescuers probably did more harm than the original owners as the ladies came to me in a filthy Viv, complete with two drops of eggs from Red, one old and one fresh, old offerings in the aspen, a heat mat directly under the exposed bulb and above the heat mat and several other horrors.
I am pleased to say that in less than 2 hours, I had the viv set up exactly as it should be, a proper thermostat and dial thermometer placed, sectioned hot and cool spots, fresh cleaned aspen, a clean water bowl, two hides and two much much happier ladies.
Red was, understandably, a bit wary when we first met, hissing and tail vibrating (so much so her first name choice was actually Fiesty), but turned into an absolute snuggle bunny once she came out of the pillow case and got into her nice new home.
Black-jack was the opposite, totally unresponsive, ignoring all attempts at stimulation, and was heading for the name Flop, which I honestly feared she wouldn't have for long... I was right, she didn't, because after a few hours in her newly redesigned home, she became a nosey little madam who decided the best way to enjoy herself was to see how many times she could get tangled in my hair when handled.
I am pleased to say that in the first week, we've had two clean sheds, and both the ladies have taken food, Red is a greedy lady, taking the 3 medium mice she was offered, plus one of the two that Black-jack was offered but rejected (she took the first like a trooper, but she's a little girl so I didn't push the issue when she didn't go after the second)
Anyways, that's our history to date, I look forwards to getting to know everybody and share the wonderful exprience that is being a herpeotologist :)

Okies, this is what I get for posting and not previewing... "A water bowl directly under the exposed bulb and above the heat mat" is what I meant to say. |

hi and welcome,
the only thing I would say is don't everfeed the snakes, one medium is enough for any snake, unless it is of a size where it can take large. |

Red is around 4' and Black-jack is just nudging the 3 1/2' mark, but both girls have small heads for thier size (I've heard the term pin-head syndrome used by friends that are very experienced snake owners), so they're unable to take larges, additionally as far as I can tell neither snake had eaten for nearly 6 months, so I figured the first feed I would let them take thier fill, then drop back to 1-2 fortnightly, would this be wrong? Armand used to take 2 large every two weeks, but he was a full 6' male. |

I would wait a bit before feeding them again as they haven't eaten for so long and there bodies will not be used to it. feeding a couple fortnightly will be fine, |

Cheers gmac, good to know I'm on the right track, want to give these ladies the best life I can, especially after the last chunk of it being so rough on them. |

Hi and welcome to the forum. It sounds as tho those girls have really landed on their feet and now can really enjoy their lives.
Do you know for certain that they are both female? Just asking as you said Red has laid 2 lots of eggs. |

Yes, they've both been sexed, Black-jack isn't quite old enough to lay yet as far as I can tell, and as I said, they'd been pretty much left in their own filth for some time by the 'rescuers', who basically topped up the water, threw in food and didn't remove it if it wasn't taken and manually turned off the light *when* they remembered to. One set of eggs was fresh, prolly dropped a few days before I took them, the other set was dried out and collapsing, both were the same colour and size so I'm fairly certain they were both Red's |
