Hi, I am fostering a corn snake since this morning, he was found in an apartment and no one claimed him. I think we may end up keeping him. I have no experience with snakes, I usually foster cats So any advice would great. I had him at the pet shop and was told he seems in good condition, I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow to get checked over.

Hi and welcome :). I got my 2 the same way no one wanted them so I took them in with the intention of finding a lovely new home for them both but 24 hours later I was smitten and they are here to stay.

Congrats on your addition. I doubt that the snake will only be a foster. They are really addictive and facinating animals. This place is great for sharing the facination too.

Hi everyone, thank you for all the replies and welcomes : )
I brought our snake to the vet yesterday, the vet had never handled a snake before so he was a bit jumpy which was very funny. He had a great assistant who was very helpful, and seems our new baby is very healthy. The vet hadn't got the equipment to sex him/her so we still don't know if it's a male or female. We refer to him as he for the moment. He was very inquisitive and had a room full of inquisitive vetinary staff piling in while we were there. I didn't think that snakes would have been such a curiosity in a town as big as this but seems like he was the attraction of the day.

Hahaha it is great seeing peoples curiosity get the better of them when it comes to snakes. Most people think they are scared of them without ever actually seeing one. I have converted a few people in the year or so I have had snakes.

I would say tho to make sure you have a look around to find yourself a vet that specialises in reptiles. You might not need it but reptile care is very different to regular pets and some vets have been known to make serious errors through lack of knowledge.

As regards to sexing your snake, ring your local rep shop. Most will sex a snake for you especially if you buy something at the same time. One of my local ones does it for free and one charges £2. Alot cheaper than the vet would probably charge.

Hi Kdlang, I'll ring around and find a vet, thanks for the advice : ) Do you know if it takes long or if it annoys the snake when the vet is sexing them?

A guy from a rep shop sexed one of my snakes the other day. Only took a few seconds and the snake didn't even notice anything going on I don't think! There are a couple of different ways to sex them and it depends on the age/size of the snake which one they use. I think.

Corns: 1.1 Anery, 1.1 Butter, 1.0 Carolina, 0.1 Hypo, 1.1 Snow, 1.0 Sunkissed
Boas: 0.1 Arabesque, 1.0 Brazilian Rainbow, 0.1 Crawl Cay, 1.1 Hogg Island X, 0.1 Hypo Hogg, 0.1 Kahl Albino (poss coral)
