Ur two snakes have diff sets ups , ones in a faun in a viv , ones on a heat mat outside , they both have stats and digi thermometers inside their fauns and our temps are set @ 28.6 degree's . Our house at nite goes cold so we haven't been turning the temps down @ nite . The one in the viv has a red bulb so as not to disturb his nite / day routine , but I wondered as he is inside a viv should be we knocking the temps down @ nite time ? Xx

I have a day/night heating setup but it is complex and not essential.

Is the one in the viv the one thats not eating, if so thats probably why.

Yup the one in the viv isn't eating @ home , so is it worth us just knocking the temp down @ nite ? I've been told they can't see the red light , but maybe coz its warm @ nite still ? Should I just turn his down by 10 degree's at nite to see if it helps ? I haven't the spare cash to get all new mat and stat for him ? I've shown a picture to the guy at reptile shop I go to get the food and he seems to think its looking ok ?

How would turning the temp down by 10 degrees help him start eating?

Do you have pics of the setup we could see?

I'd say he's not eating because the viv is too big for him, he doesn't feel secure enough that he has anywhere to go to digest so he doesn't eat, might be worth converting to a RUB until he is bigger.

This is the owner with the faun in the viv Bob, so he's got the right space, just within a viv. Pics were posted in one of their last question threads about his setup, and I believe it is pretty much still the same? Could be wrong there. Really, you want to be on a heat mat, cos otherwise you just cannot be sure. You don't know if the light is affecting him, regardless of what you've been told. I mean, none of mine have day/night cycles, its not necessary in corns. As long as one end is between 27-30C and the cool end is room temp, you should be fine, and your snake should feel secure enough to eat, and be able to digest properly.

Ahh I retract my last statement and am now just picking through the brain cells and think I now remember that setup, I'm getting old I think.

Is it a red bulb or a true nocturnal Infra Red bulb? See my royal hated the red bulb I had but was fine when I switched to IR, to be honest I barely understand the difference and think if I put that bit of information in the old brain at the moment something useful will fall out so just do the 'it works, thats all I know' thing.

But as Tehbunneh says a mat will be your best bet in a faun for getting the temps right and getting a feeding snake and day/night really isn't important but getting the right temp gradient REALLY is.

Hey lou , I don't kno if I'm readin ur text abit funny thought u seemed abit offish ? I will get a pic up wen I'm home .
Both the fauns have three sides cover by the tropical fish backing u can get to help him feel secure too . I don't think its an infa red bulb just red spot light ? It reads 27 late at nite in warm end and 28.6 during the day wen heatings on etc . And the cool end I wud have thought is abit higher than room temp bein inside the viv see

Try replacing the red bulb for a true Infra Red one, they need their normal cycle of light through the day, dark at night, it may be as simple as that to solve the not eating. I would say (as a very basic comparison) you have an ideal hatchling setup on top of the viv and that snake is eating. If I was you though I'd nip out buy a bigger heat mat and use it to heat both fauns on your existing stat, £10-15 for a mat is way better than having to take a snake to be assist fed. You could even have them both in the viv for added escape security (with the light off).

thanks dude :) really appreciate ur advice , we are def gonna look @ changing his set up . its just abit frustrating i suppose atm but we are learning . i think where we had them from said kyles set up would be perfect for him , but in theory that may have been true , but now we see it may not be . when they are big enough for the viv will we still have so much trouble ? or is it simply because the bulb isnt really equipt to heat a smaler space like a faun ? and will be able to provide a better gradient when the snake is in the fully viv? x

Go for a medium sized mat, I think your tank measures around 36x21x15 maybe 16 not sure, I have the larger size which you'd probably want to upgrade to in a few months and the medium mat has always stood its own.

No worries, yeah the bulb really isn't the best way to heat a faun, aim for a mat so that you can fit 50% of each faun onto the mat and then you only need one. I only have single mats in vivs and have only used fauns for Geckos but I'll see if I can help.

http://www.surreypetsupplies.co.uk/habistat-heat-strip-22w-35in-x-6in.html (just for illustration)

A mat similar to this one is yourt best bet, not sure of your fauns measurements but you can see how the mats are divided in the middle, one faun gets one side, the other gets the other side, just a question of calculating the size required, if your stuck post your faun dimensions and I'll do the maths.

I just bought a 4ft heatstrip.

I could fit 4x 9L rubs on it, and now they have moved up to bigger ones I can still fit 3x 33L rubs on.

As a rough guide there is two types of mat size dependant on which way you want to put the fauns together.
14 X 8 inches (36 X 21 cm) if you are putting them hot end to hot end
7 X 16 inches (18 X 42 cm) if you are putting them side by side.

A bit bigger or a tiny bit smaller wont make much of a difference but as Louise32 says you could buy a big heat strip, specially if you are considering getting more snakes.

i was thinking of putting them hot end to hot end , and just sit his next to hers so they both look like what hers does :) we are gona pick one up for sure . the reptile shop still has kyle atm and she hasnt had to force or assist feed him , he just ook it on his own whih is good , so we will get the mat set up fo wen he comes home . but bulbs will be fine in the viv wen they are bigger rite?
