Whilst talking to a friend in America that is also into snakes, I have been talked into loving the expensive Ball Python XDD OH MY GOODNESS do those snakes come in some groove morphs! I couldn't BELIEVE it when I saw a Killer Bee for the first time O.O What a gorgeous snake, and so similar to the Corn in care!
I have decided that, at some point, I WILL own one or two of these fantastic little snakies! I understand they can be a bit finickety about food, and have a tendency to shed badly, but I just thought I would share my new found love X3 I don't usually like the pythons, but these guys aren't as sluggy as Royals, and don't grow too large, so I am looking forward to a time when I may be able to get one! |

BallPython is the American name for a Royal Python, they are exactly the same.
but your right they are gorgeous. AND not at all slugish! lol.
They are notoriously funny feeders but it does them no harm. |

They are not similar in care to a corn, corns are hardy creatures royals are stressy and take the huff if anything changes. Similarly for heating you shouldnt be using a mat for vivs should be bulbs whereas corns can be kept on mats.
Eating, is not finicky it is what they do they eat when they want and they dont eat when they want. people get more stressed than the snakes at them not eating, going for 3 months without food is not unusual.

Was it definitely ball pythons your friend was talking about?
If so then yes they are also known as royals.
The breeder I got Falcor from breeds them and refers to them as ball pythons as do most. If you look at a lot of breeders websites they are referred to as ball pythons.
Hope you get to be able to afford one of these very beautiful slugs soon.

thre was a really good artical on them and their morphs in reptil keeper mag a couple of months ago
i think you can still get a back copy
some are beautiful, i love the bumblebee morph, but i expect they are bloomin expensive to buy as hatchies lol |

Could a Royal hatchling be in a RUB with a mat under initially and have a radiant heat source when upgreaded to a viv or do they need a proper viv straight away? Thanks |

yes thats what I do with mine, rubs and mats, rubs are ideal for baby royals as it gives them some privacy and is a small enough space for them to feel secure. |

When young and still small they could happily be in a rub.
It's when they are a fair bit bigger that it could cause issues as they're quite heavy bodied snakes (fattys) and there's a chance of thermal blocking occurring when using a heatmat.

Aaaah, I see! No wonder I was so confused when some places call them Royals and others Balls! Thanks for the undated information there!
I've been looking at a few sites, and I understand that they need the light, but other places suggested a heat mat as well. Is that not a good idea? I'll be reading up a bit more by the looks of it X3 I won't be getting any for a good few years, but they are an interesting snake! At least I now know that Royals and Balls are the same breed! That should aid in finding them for sale X3 |

I use an Infra red bulb, for heat. I had a whole load of hassle & stress caused by bad advice from the reptile shop so be careful. They are huffy and stressy, but once you get your setup just as they like it, they are a joy to own. The thing that amazes me the most though is when handling they feel and act totally different to a corn, they have quite a bulk to them too, my Duke is a right heffer, and you get a real idea of their strength just by holding them, a corn snake adult will barely be as strong as a royal hatchie.
I am very glad I got a Royal, even just a normal looking one. |
