Morning all,

Rhubarb shed last Tuesday night (1.2.11) and he's been active and inquisitive since but still has not eaten, his last meal was 16.1.11 which he ate no problem he then started to change colour and refused food on the 23rd and again on the 30th I then offered a mouse on the 3.2.11 2 days after he shed but again he refused and again last night. Please can someone tell me that this is normal and nothing to worry about and it's not because I have now split him and Rhubarb up.

Jane.

doesnt sound too much to worry about (i know thats always hard :) ) but that isnt long to go without food. as always, the more details you give about your setup and the snake itself, the more we can help. That said, snakes are not sociable creatures so the split SHOULD have no bearing on it. keep trying once every 7 days and also try leaving food with him for a while and seeing if he takes when your not around. good luck.

Thank you Benji54.

Rhubarb is approx 3 foot 3 inch, he is in a 3 foot x 2 foot x 1.5 foot high viv, he has now gone onto aspen bedding which he loves, he has a 18 watt heatmat (23" x 11") with habistat thermo and a digi stat, the temps are 21 - 23 cool end and 28 - 30 warm end he has 3 hides 1 in the cool end and 2 in the warm end, he has UV lighting for 12 hours a day and artificial plants and toys. Since moving Custard into her own viv just over a week ago he has really come out of his shell and is far more social and interactive with humans he also spends far more time roaming about his viv he just doesn't seem to want to eat. Oh and I adopted/rescued Rhubarb and Custard from a friend of a friend of my son due to a relationship breakup but I wasn't given any info on either of them apart from they had always lived together in the same viv since they got them and "although Rhubarb is male and Custard is female don't worry they won't breed in their cage" !!

i have 2 corns which i acquired in simialar circumstances. there are things you can do to discourage breeding but splitting em up is the best way. as i say they arn't social animals so they wont go off their food and pine for each other (as far as we know [though its kinda nice to think that they would :) ])

his reluctance to feed is not rare so keep trying every 7 days and failing that, search feeding in the search box and flick through some of the feeding solutions in existing threads, there should be lots of info available for your perusal. good luck, enjoy and no probs! :)

I wouldn't worry too much. It could be down to breeding season. One of my males hasn't eaten the 2 feeds he has been offered and he is definitely more active. I would just keep offering a feed on his usual feeding day. Leave it in his viv overnight to see if he is interested when its all dark then take it out in the morning if he hasn't had it.

yup, breeding season is getting under way at this time of year and many males will stop eating because they've other things on their mind :)
