I have a female cockatiel thats laid a few clutches of eggs. Crossed fingers, not for a while now.
Its got me thinking about the same issue in corn snakes.

Has anyone has personal experience of this with a corn?
I know it does happen, but I'm wondering whether its a common occurance or not and whether theres any ways to quell the desire to lay?

i think that any animal that lays eggs can do this, i think that its just 1 of those things, i think that in the wild, they would lay "duds" to confuse predators, maybe this is what she needs to do, i dont know, but its an idea though and as long as she doesnt become bound, i think that it should be fine

Female corns have been known and will produce unfertile eggs quite literally if they want to.
These are known as 'slugs'.
There's a fair bit of info on the intertubes and on this forum about them, just do a search for SLUGS in the search bar on the top right.
As for trying to stop them unfortunately there is no way to stop them doing it.
