milo has lately been really acting up. He is not eating and he is being quite agressive towards me and anyone who comes close to him.
this started a few days after i got him and i have left him alone since.
his behaviour has been:
- hissing at everytime i put my hand to change his water or open his viv
- defencively rearing his head a lot
- coils tightly when i try to put my hand in or when anyones around
- flinching when i enter my room
and recently attempted to bite me

his temps fine, there's loads of places for him to hide, ive tried to feed him, he's showing no signs of sheading and when i first brought him in the first week i didn't handle him.
he was fine when i got him and the pet shop guy told me he was a great snake.
im starting to become a bit scared of milo and i don't want to be
any advice or opinions anyone
please help

Mine is the same, mine is new too and ive had her a week and a half!!

I handled her in the first week and she deff doesnt have a prob eating, but mine jumps alot, and coils in the corner, aand backs away and bit me!! and it doesnt hurt but makes me jump... and even though i know it doesnt hurt, im **** scared everytime i put my hand in!! its been a week tomorrow since i held her becaus eof her being due a feed and now because shes been fed, and today i swear she had this really evil look in her eye, so i guess tomorrow i will find out if she will bite me again!!

My one bit of advice, the thing im trying which might help you too is put a piece of your clothing in that youve worn so he knows your scent and knows your scent wont hurt her..

But im glad you wrote this cos i need some more ideas too !!!

Its really depressing !!!

First off, don't be scared, it will make them more scared!
Second, they are in a new environment with new smells that they don't understand and therefore are a bit stressed because of this and because they may think that something out there could hurt them or eat them.

You just have to carry on and eventually, they will learn/recognize things. I know it's all harder said that done but you just have to keep doing what your doing and maybe after a week of settling in try some handling so they get used to it.

Could be for a few reasons but if the snakes are relatively new they are most likely just settling in. Some snakes take a little bit of time a patience to get comfortable with their surroundings and with you. Don't give up on them or fear them either. Remember your the boss, their striking, hissing and tail rattling is all for show, they cant do you any harm and they know it.

It is a common time of year for snakes to stop eating, just keep an eye on weight and continue trying to feed as normal weekly or fortnightly. Both my snakes are fasting at the moment, its a pain but nothing to worry about in a healthy snake.

The 'sock' method is proven time and time again, put a sock in your jumper while watching tv or something then pop it in the viv/faun/rub and then your smell is with them constantly.

Don't like the clothes in the viv. When I tried that snake made a thread loose, made a huge hole and then got stuck in the clothes :(

Use tight weave clothing like a sock (not a holey one).

Time is the best healer! My Charlie hissed at me the other day as well as rattled his tail as I had to feed him in his viv due to him outgrowing his rub and there was some substrate on the mouse so I went into remove it and he hissed AND rattled at me and he is the MOST laid back snake I know!
If I were you I would just put your hand in and leave it in but away from him dont put it right in his face for short periods a few times a day to get him used to you are not going to hurt him. Just for a minute or so at first if it is so stressful for him and increase work him up gradual until he calms ... Of course may be total inadequete advice being an ameteur myself but I had a hatchling who I really thought would NEVER calm down... with persistance and I made a point of putting my hand in not doing anything massive just putting my hand in and doing nothing (wait till daytime to change water when they are least active) she calmed down and turned out really nice!

i now feel very stupid!

went to place a item of clothing in his viv and i then realised that milo, has started his sheading process (his eyes were clouded and his skin was starting to grey,i have very bad lighting in my house so i couldn't tell until i was upclose)

no wonder he was so angry with me! im definatly gonna leave him alone untill he has shead

sorry for the panic, i should have had a good hard look, before i jumped to any conclusions

thanks for the advice everyone

Don't worry about it, always best to voice concerns and check them out with others. At least that way your not going to ignore any sudden changes. I'm a total worrier where my girls are concerned.

Don't worry I'm sure in a few months all us newbies will look back on some of the things we have written and have a damn good laugh at ourselves.

He seems to be a pretty big snake, a few years is he? It might be he's getting defensive over his territory and looking for some sexy time with a lady snake! I wouldn't worry though. My Widget was a right nasty piece of work, and now, he's nice as pie, though still coils up like he's going to strike sometimes when holding him, especially if I move to get something. He's not bit me since the first two-three weeks, and now, when I disturb him, he seems resigned to the attention, lol! Its just a matter of patience and regular handling. I didn't do any of the clothing stuff, just got him out every day for about half an hour, unless he'd been fed, and it did the trick. I understand, though, that being bitten can be a scary experience, hell, it makes me jump and I let him bite me when he goes for me. Its just a case of staying still and firm in your resolve and going for it. Some snakes will be grumpy when shedding, but all mine are perfectly happy to be fed and handled whilst in blue. Maybe my boys are all just really laid back XD

AWWW man, glad you have a reason why yours is angry ...

I actually am starting to think Kchalise hates me!!!

The 2 times she had pooed since i had her were on me, once was 5 days after shed ben fed and was after like 10 mins of holding her,

So ive beent trying the piece of clothing thing to look in her faun and where had she pooed??.... right on the my bit of clothing so that got thrown away!!

She looked petrified of me last night, but i couldtn get her out anyways cos i was still letting her food go down from 2 days before !!...

But im getting more scared of her if anything and really disheartned!! i never thought shed be like this!!..

Being honest now im absolutley petrified of getting her out tonight... i knwo shes going to bit me more that once..... and the clothing obviously didnt work she just wanted to poo on me and theres still more to come out yet, any bets it comes out on me tonight !!! :(

Everyone says dont be scared it makes her worse but even when i contorl it if i put my hand in and she jumps or anything i jump god.... really frustrated!!

Milo's around 3.5-4 years old, he has been in the pet shop a while and re-homed twice, so all that moving around, must be a bit stress full i can see why he is stressed out (i know i would be )

He hasn't been to bad this morning, just coiled up near his water bowl, on one of my old socks, so hopefully he will be in a better mood after he has shead and he should be a bit more use to my smell, if he is gonna coil up on the sock

Lynne I bought my son his snake Savara for his 20th birthday last year and we put him in his faun, did all the right things in the 1st week and then it came to my sons 1st handling!!! You would have laughed your socks of at us trying to get him out, we both had sweaty hands and I honestly don't know who was more jumpy out of the 3 of us, in the end my son just picked him up and placed him in his other had and everything was fine, I don't even know what made us so jumpy.

When I got my snake about 3 months later I was so much more confident and my snake is well chilled.

Just keep persaveering and have a little fiddle with the bedding and rub your hands over anything you have in with your snake to help with the scent thing. I hope it gets easier for you both.

Don't worry, Vin looks at me like he hates me quite often! They just get nervy and because we love them to bits we feel bad that they don't want handling! x
