Hi everyone. I just got my first snake yesterday, a lovely 1 yr old corn. When I got home about 11.30am he explored his tank for about 45 minutes and then buried under the substrate. By midnight as I was getting ready for bed he hadnt moved and being a new owner and a worrier I checked on him. I could see him breathing and so left him for the night. This morning he still hasn't moved the slightest bit. I know I should leave him but being a worrier I lifted the hide that was covering a part of him and felt his skin. It was quite cold and he didnt move. I started moving the substrate trying to find his head, found his tail instead which was warmer and did react to my touch. I then saw him watching me just next to his tail. He is stretched out right around the tank completly avoiding the heat mat and he hasn't touched any water. Is this natural, the cold bit in the middle of his body in particular?
Thanks for reading. A worrier. |

Hi.
If you could tell us a little bit more about your set up it may help. What are the temps? Is the heat mat statted? What substrate and how thick is the layer in the tank? When did he last feed etc
I know at times my Nimbus is cold to the touch, when he has been hiding in the cool end. If the heat mat is running at the correct temp the snake will move back and forth from warm to cold end as it needs to. They will also quite happily hide in one place for days, more so if they are in a new environment and have found a safe place to hide until they feel safe enough to come out and explore again.

Warm end is just under 30c cold end is around 20c. No thermostat as that was supposed to arrive yesterday morning before I moved him in but my supplier let me down, It should arrive this morning though. I have been using a timer-plug/thermometer set up that I quickly threw together myself but it means the temp can fluctuate a lot and it may have been a bit cold at night.
Was told he was fed on Tuesday, 2 mice instead of one because one of the other snakes didn't want their's.
Substrate is aspen about 2.5cm thick.
Thanks for reply I'm probably worring for nothing. |

I'm still very new to corns, well any snakes lol but that all seems ok. You may want to thin out the aspen a bit more at the warm end over the heat mat as I think you only need a very thin layer to stop the heat being blocked but can keep it thicker at the cool end.
Don't worry. I'm sure your snake is doing fine and is just getting used to his new home.
Other people will add to this later who can help more.
Oh and welcome to the forum. Look forward to seeing pics once your snake is settled in. |

Don't worry too much. Once you get all the equipment set up properly things will be ok. Snakes are quite hardy creatures and he should be ok with your temporary setup for now. It's perfectly normal for him to take cover and stay in hiding until he's more used to his new surroundings. We normally say to give any new snake a week settling in period when all you need to do is to change the water, check his substrate for mess and to do do a 'tidy up' which all helps him get used to your smell. Please don't feel that you're worrying for nothing. If you have any concerns then do ask....at least we can reassure you and help. It's better than not asking then finding it was something serious! Welcome to the forum by the way!!!! |

Thanks guys. My thermostat arrived 15 mins ago so I can install it when I get in from work tonight :).
This forum has already been great before I got him with all the useful advice.
Can't wait to get some pics of him when he's ready to come out!
Thanks again. |
