at college? I'm leaving school in september and wanted to become an anethetist but due to medical conditions I can't which sucks on a massive level as I'm all into hospitals and stuff as I'm forever inside them! Anyway... Is anyone doing animal studies or care at college as I'd literally LOVE to do it and then go on to work with animals in the future, I have a massive soft spot for reptiles so those in particular. So yeah, if anyone can tell me if it's worth while and stuff let me know please

Have you also considered veterinary nurse in a practice that has an interest in reptiles?

Yep, but you need to have done an animal college course and stuff to get points to get to uni :) and my medical conditions wouldn't physically allow me to do it which is really sad and frustrating :(

I'm currently doing an FdSc in Animal Management at University. If you had an interest in the field, I would say it's probably worth you looking into some more and getting in touch with the lecturers at the college you're looking at. One thing I will say, is that it is NOT typically a direct route into a field. It's a good qualification to take say, into racing yards, retail (ie if you work at a pet store) and similar but if you want to go down a specific route, than you're better off looking at more direct ways to get there.

It's definitely a good course, but I would say have a chat, especially given that the college can give you advice about the best route for your chosen career plan.

I did a FdSc in Animal Science and Management followed by a BSc Top up year in Animal Science and Management. I absolutly loved my course... however I finished in June and I am currently working in a pub. A lot of people from my course are unemployed or are in non animal related jobs. Getting into an animal related job is extremly difficult. All I can say is it is a small step in the right dirrection. Somethinq you will have to do is work for nothing!! Most jobs in the animal industry ask for atleast 2 years experience... you will have to do a lot of voluntary work to get that experience.

But dont let that dishearten you because I have been to amazing places and worked with loads of animals through voluntary work and I wouldnt change it for a thing. If its what you want to do then do lots of research into courses and places that you would like to work and talk to people in jobs that you would like to see how they got there.

Also dont let your medical condition hold you back, I dont know what it is but one of the people from my course who does have a job in the animal industry suffered from a physical disability and never let it get in the way. She is know working for a dolphin and whale conservation project.
