on sunday im picking up a juvenile bearded dragon caled "chilli". Im buying her from a friend with the full set up. ive seen her loada+shes gorgeous...got alot of colour on her!
Wil post pics of her on sunday but in meanwhile i have a few questions:
1) Ideal beardy substrate??
2) Any advice/info on beardies shedding? i.e. how they do it, how often, any help they may need.
Been looking at alot of fact sheets+am trying to do my research, so guess il see how she settles in but have ALWAYS wanted a beardy!!!

nice one,
Strangely enough I use aubiose as a substrate, have used beech chips in the past they are both fine. Beardies shed just give them a spray from time to time and make sure they get their greens and something to rub on and they should do ok. |

| what is aspen like as a substrate for them??? as i have LOTS of it!!! she's got alot of stuff with her (hides, rock (for basking, not a heated one), little wooden house) to rub on, but ive always seen her shedding over a longer period of time than snakes - i.e. over course of a few days...is this normal?? |

great! thanks for the advice gmac :) nee to double check her age wheni get her, but think in next 6 months il be treating her to a bigger viv!!! Soooo excited!
Also, Are there differnt 'morphs' of beardies?? |

yup some, but dont have the singlest clue what they are. Some are yellow, red and orange some even have all the ones mentioned  , thats my limit im afraid |

| i had mine on sand for a couple of years but i advise against it! They stink on sand!! Bark is the way to go! |

Have a look on www.mybeardeddragons.co.uk
They shed in stages (different parts of the body at a time) rather than one whole thing like our snakes.
There are loads of different morphs and even different skin types now, like leatherbacks and silkbacks.
There's lots of info on the web, just google bearded dragon and sift your way through!!!

| everyone i know uses sand :) as you may know they need calcium in there diet and sometimes when they miss there food they will take in the sand so i can strongly advise calcium sand aswell as the calcium powder :) as said they dont shed all in one like a snake they shed in pieces :) |
my aunties, bestfriends, hairdressers, friends boyfriend had a snake and it stretched out to measure him to eat him......true story.....

| alot of people dont as beardies were noticed to licking at the sand causeing 2 problems. one to much sand can clump and cause impactation if they eat it and 2 if they do start licking at it and its calcium sand they can then start to take to much calcium to to there body causing health issues |

| i like the way you put a link to a thread where most people say they dont recommend calcium sand and most say they dont use any sort of sand at all when you last post on here said everyone you know uses sand and u strongly advice to use calcium sand lol |

Well, she's arrived!! here's a few photos i took after id cleaned out her viv just after i put her in! If anyone can identify the 'morph' id appreciate it, as i know she's not a normal beardie (was with my friend when she bought her)
And dont you guys worry im getting a guard for that bulb tomo! Ive got a massive burn on my arm from touching it slightly, god knows what it could do to Chilli's sensitive skin!!
Also, can someone tell me ideal hot and cool end temps for beardies as im also buying another digital thermomoter tomo!

Never use calci sand the last thing you want is the dragon getting a taste for it and having a sand feast only problems lie in that direction ie you dont want to have impaction caused by the substrate you have added, although all substrates can have that issue calci sand is possibly the worst for it.
