Howdy folks! Hope everyone's keeping warm!
As I've mentioned in my introductory post, I'm currently doing the preliminary research into getting and setting up a baby corn (it's definitely going to happen, I've come to realise just how much I'm loving corns). One of the main things I'm doing at the moment is digging out local reptile 'specialist' stores (I'm in the Bristol area) and getting some quotes on a setup.
As I'm wanting to start with a baby, the sort of setup I've been looking at the faunarium kits (this also gives me adequate time to sort out a custom viv as I'll need to get one built to accomodate the space I have). So far, the kits/setups I've been looking at have included the following:
1 x Large Faunarium
1 x Heat Mat
1 x Thermostat (both appear to be the Habistat mat stat)
2 x Hides
1 x Water Bowl
1 x Bag of substrate
1 x Thermometer
1 x Small bag of pinkies (about 6)
1 x Baby Corn (normal Carolina type)
So far, this setup (including the snake) has been quoted to me at £100 - £130 with £100 being the cheapest I've been quoted and £130 the most expensive. What I'm trying to get an idea of, is this a reasonable price to ask? I'm a big supporter of small businesses, so do like to do what I can to help them out, but at the same time, want to be reasonable about how much I'm spending.

If you have a look on one or two online reptile suppliers you will get a good idea of the setting up costs. I think there's a fairly new one that a lot of our members have found reasonable called blue lizard, I'm pretty sure they have a website. Even if you want to go down the 'local guy' road at least it will be a guide to pricing so you'll know if you're being taken for a fool or not!  |

I got my amel stripe snake (price £80) with most of that kit, it had no stat which I got for around £10 and no hides, which I got for free from around my house for £100 total, so I think it seems a little expensive because the same store had carolinas for £30, which would have made snake + kit £50 plus £10 for the stat off ebay. I might just have a really good shop though :)

Im buying my hatchling setup from blue lizard and everything I need Im getting for about 60 quid then I have the money to buy whatever morph I want (PEWTERRR). xD

| I think thats a reasonable price! I spent at a guess probably double that on setting up for mine not including the snakes. |

| I would say that if your local guy is knowledgeable you can't put a price on that. I spent a lot of money on my first set up, and some of it would have been cheaper online but having an expert 2 minutes down the road available to Spot is a great reassurance to me as a new snake owner. |

| Aye, he seems very knowledgeable. He was also happy enough just to chat with me, let me ask all my questions (and there's always some silly ones at the start, right?). He breeds his own stock too as well as offering a pretty reasonably rated boarding (something like £2 a day for snakes). |

Stupid as this sounds, I don't actually know what boarding means.
Seen loads of vivs in my reptile shop with "boarding" on them, I thought it meant breeding lol. |

| Boarding means that they'll basically take on your reptiles and look after them. A bit like a boarding kennels for dogs or a cattery for cats and can be used when you were away and perhaps unable to have your snake properly looked after while you were gone. |

At worst thats about £125.
If you buy the bits separately, get what you can off ebay, you can cut that price right down, and getting the snake from a breeder will cut it even further.
From a shop, its not a bad price, but you will always be able to find it cheaper. |

Well, not so much looking for cheap, I know I probably am looking at a minimum of £100 to get me going. Just really looking to get a wider pool of pricing ideas as opposed to going to one/two places and that's that.
Technically I'm from Weston, but Bristol's my closest 'big city' ^^ |

It's good to see others the same as me, not looking for the cheapest in everything lol.
I live by a rule "You buy cheap you buy twice"...
I would say £130 is a decent price.
Also how much is the heatmat, and what litre is the faun?
Is the thermometer digital?
All these things can affect price quite a lot :) |

| All the fauns offered are the large flat ones by exo-terra (think it's L:18in W: 12in H: 6.5in). The thermometers offered aren't digital, but I'm planning on grabbing a couple off eBay (can't go wrong with £2.99 for them!) |

Depends on your opinion of what is deemed 'cheap' as well.
I needed another couple of heat mats the other day and my closest place had the 5x9 (or whatever the smallest ones are) for 17 quid each.
That is somewhere that is expensive, so looking for cheaper was sensible. |

Ooo that's a good idea about the water bowl, Sexybear. We're overflowing with glass rammikins and I've been wondering what to do with them all xD Time to steal a couple!
@ Kehhlyr: As this is my first foray into the reptile keeping world, my main monetary 'concern' as it were, is that I let myself get a bit swept away with 'ohmigoshneedthisandthisandthisand.. oops broke' and get a bit carried away *blush*. Whilst I say 'cheaper option' as it were, I don't mean to come across as stingy (if I am). I've no real idea as to a general price range of things and with our economy in a bit of disarray, I know that some prices have sky rocketed. |

I agree with you there K, £17 is bloody expensive for the smallest ones, I got a large one for £14.
