My snow corn, Tia, has been housed for over a year with what I was told was another female. Yesterday I saw something that looked like a poo blockage just around her ventril scale. It looked a bit greenish and not very healthy so I removed it with some tissue and to my surprise what came out looked more like a dislocated and shrivelling snake penis - I assumed it was hers (well, his!) We booked the first available vet appointment for her which is tomorrow, but she otherwise looked well and healthly, as does my other snake who is housed with her. Anyway, we came down this morning, and to my shock there were two yellow "stones" in her tank - quite clearly infertile eggs! I can only assume that the pair have mated, although goodness knows what happened to the other snake's penis for it to be still inside her! But now, she's laid a white egg that seems quite soft - is it fertile? What do I do? I have a small plastic tank with a heat pad but no other materials or means of incubation. Tia seems well and very active - should I risk moving her to take her to her vet appointment tomorrow? Any advice at all please |

Hi, the soft white one sounds like a fertile egg. Do you have a Thermostat for your Heatmat? If yes set it to about 27 degrees celcius with a moist substrate in the box, if you can put the whole thing in a polystyrene box to ensure the temp stays pretty constant, if she has more eggs in her they should be there by tomorrow, but a Vet appointment is probably a good idea, then you can ask if any eggs are still in her. As to the Hemipenis that was inside her, maybe it was something else, if it was the hemi penis of the other one then you would have noticed it. Good luck and keep us informed |

Thank you so much - what should I use as substrate? I normally use wood chippings so not able to be moistened, would kitchen roll or newspaper work? I do have a thermostat, but no polystyrene - is it still worth a shot at incubating? And as for 'Mum', should I move her into a spare tank on her own or is she ok where she is? I don't want to distress her either way. And finally (sorry for all the questions) Is it best to use a water spray to keep it moist and how often? Thanks again |

If you have a wet box then put it in the Viv, as a laying box, it reduces stress for her. Sphagnum moss is good as a substrate, but moist kitchen roll would do for starters. See if you can get a Polystyrene box, and yes its worth trying to incubate, you will notice soon enough if it doesn't work, the eggs will get mouldy. As to how often, just keep an eye on the eggs, if they start falling in or getting inward bumps then they need more moisture, but too much is also not good so rather more often topping up than soaking them fron the start.
By the way, your welcome, thats one of the reasons why we are in a forum, to get information and help |

Another thing, try to avoid water drops falling directly onto the eggs, it can cause them to die |

I don't think the egg is doing too well Half of it is white but half of it is yellow and still soft. It looks like there's something pink inside. The spare thermostat was a dimmer and not for a heat mat, so the best I've been able to do is damp kitchen roll in a small plastic tub in the viv at about 80 degrees...I don't fancy its chances much. Poor egg |

I put a damp hide box in her viv as she going nuts, and she layed another three and a completely squished one. But the first three look pretty good! A little wet perhaps but we've now got them safely tucked up in some verm in a plastic tub in a poly box with a heat mat on the lid. Fingers crossed |

The egg is likely to be dead now. Leaving the egg in the viv is a bad idea, you cant keep the humidity high enough and the temps constant enough. Are the parents separate now? its a good idea to do that if not. if you want to breed, look at the stickies, read the threads, there is aplenty of info on breeding, setting up an incubator, and what to do with the egg. Water droplets landing on the eggs does not kill them. |
