Hi, I was just wondering if you guys and gals would report somewhere to the RSPCA? The place I went to get my frozen mice from (a farm park) has a burmese python, its huge! Anyway, it has a fibreglass water bowl sunk into the bottom of his enclosure but it was nearly empty and the little water that was left looked stagnant. The snakes skin seemed to have several sores and there was loads of pieces of shed skin on the floor, not one whole piece. I don't know about pythons but sure they're supposed to shed the same as corns? It goes without saying he needs clean water!

If you are worried about the way they are keeping an animal, especially if it is for sale, or even otherwise, and definitely if it is an exotic that is clearly not getting the right sort of housing treatment, it may be an idea to report it, just so that the RSPCA is aware of the place, and can get steps in place to try and rectify the situation. They are likely to be in contact with specialists in the field that they will be able to contact in order for the right sort of advice to be given to the place in question, and thus either get it rehoused in more suitable accommodation within the farm-shop, or else take it into care and probably get it fostered/housed with one of these specialists. It is definitely worth bringing it to the attention of the RSPCA, as they will have more authority then a member of the public for making sure that animal is gotten the right sort of attention needed, as you never know what else may be going on with other exotics they house, front of house, and back! |

Yes,I definitely would. By the sounds of it that snake needs medical attention. They admittedly need more help with shedding than corns in general but they should be helping it with the shed if its not shedding well and cleaning it out too. I'd get in touch with the RSPCA asap. If you're worried at all just say you want to be anonymous. |

Dude, get on the phone to the RSPCA. If it was me I would have probably grabbed a worker by the scruff of there neck and got them told (but I have a bad temper and HATE animal cruelty). Get them reported and they will hopefully get the poor thing housed to someone who can care for it and someone who actually cares about them. |

tbh the RSPCA are a waste of time and money. they're highly unlikely to do anything about it but at least you'll feel like you've done something, and if numerous people complain about the same thing they might actually do something.......alternatively, complain to your local council

i agree with gp about rspca not doing alot but i agree OHG id have probly lost it. if you feel strongly on subject ajacklin you could allways go and ask to speak to person in charge of the animal to explain to you why its in the condition its in but play it cool i find if you ask general info trade keepers are more likely to tell the real truth than if you go all guns blazing let us know what happens |

Definitely agree with that Smithy. I would definitely lose it. Especially if it was some spotty teenager with more fungus on his face than a tree has. Who didn't care about it and just laughed it off. But yeah if you go in calmly and just enquire as if you wanted to buy it. But ask as if your clueless, they usually attempt to be more helpfull and you can see if they REALLY know how to look after it and its just been neglected or something. Then decide what to do after that. |

a few months ago i went into a local pet shop that has a rep section and i was so concerned about the condition of 2 royal pythons i did actually pull aside a member of staff for a chat to make her aware. she informed me that she didn't deal with the reps as such and the member of staff that usually deals with them was away - true, the staff member i usually deal with wasn't there - but that she'd tell somebody who could deal with them................fobbed off? who knows? i've not been back in since but these royals looked like death and needed a vet IMO |

What a difficult situation to be in. I must admit I'd have to report it to somebody. I'd probably go with both the RSPCA and the council. Do let us know which way you decide to go. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Thanks for the replies, sorry I've not been back on....working away Anyway I did inform the RSPCA, they said they will get someone there to check it out asap. I described the situation as best as I could but they were asking if the snake seemed distressed or lethargic or anything....it's pretty hard to tell looking at a snake from a few feet away! I don't know if I'll hear back from them but hope they check it out! I thought it a bit odd when I bought my new corn from this place; he asked if she would be going in the same viv as my other corn, when I said no as I'd read some horror stories he just said "they'll be fine, they won't harm each other" he never even asked about my other one, he's twice the size and age of the new one! |

it's easier to get a sale if they say that rather than saying you need another set-up (which might have to wait till pay-day and would potentially lose them the sale completely) not good but seems to be the way it works in some shops |

Theres a shop near my that I can't go in cos I get so angry. All the snakes are in filthy vivariums and all the other animals are in just as bad condition. Theres been countless attempts by everyone in my area to get it shut down but they've had inspections and everythings legal So annoying when you can't do anything about it. |

Ahhh if only I lived in Nottingham I would go and visit said place and see the situation for myself, if several people reported the same incident, they wouldn't be able to ignore it. |
