At last I've decided on a name for my little amber hatchie. I'm calling her Cleo. Depending on where you look some say the name means 'Queen', some say 'Fame & Glory and my favourite says 'Beautiful Goddess'! Today was our first day after settling in. We can now start to get to know each other. Cleo is very fast, a bit nervous (understandably) and timid but she will tolerate gentle handling. We've had a couple of 2-3 minute sessions today. I know if I take it slow & steady she will soon become tame and used to be handled just like Sidney. I'm really looking forward to getting to know my little girl. |

Oh I always wanted to know how to properly handle a snake after the intial settling in period.
It is a lovely name. Sometime you can look at anything and name it... I name alot of things from radiators to pillows. |

Ruby is 10 weeks and 4 days old now and she has been with me a month today and the 1st few weeks were pretty scary holding her for me because she was just so fast and jumpy and somewhere I had to have a gentle grip on her, so we kept our handling to about 5 minutes twice a day, afternoon and evening, then all of a sudden one evening I realised I'd had her out almost 1/2 hour. Now I have her out for about 15 mins when I get home from work in the afternoon and then in the evening she can be out for 1/2 hour - 45 mins and she seems more than happy going in and out of my fingers and she must be more than happy in my hands as she did her 1st shed in my hands a few days ago.
I don't know if how I'm doing it is right of wrong but I'm just going with what feels right and I want her to be a snake who likes to come out and play and she seems happy to me :-) |

Cleo is a beautiful name Angie and I think that 'Beautiful Goddess' is the best description for her. Her colours truly are stunning and such a contrast to Hissin-Sid!
Must be a bit strange getting used to handling a little one but you have the confidence and the sense of calm that is needed for her to soon settle down and start giving you those hand-massages you love, now that Sid has moved onto your neck !
It sounds like Ruby is doing really well Messymoo and you are both enjoying your handling sessions. I will say that, with my adults, I am strict about not going over the half-hour period with them (unless I lose track of time of course )....only because I dont want to overstimulate them or tire them out. That is a personal choice and not based on any proof that it does them harm to have them out longer....I just think it is a good idea to keep it controlled.
As long as you are doing what feels right, and you should be able to tell by now if she were getting stressed by being out for so long, then it is probably fine. And to have her do her 1st shed in your hands ....do you realise how many forum members have never seen their snakes shed, let alone felt it happen?!

Bless her, Ruby must be happy to shed in your hands. It's a lovely feeling isn't it, Sidney is very chilled and laid back. He's shed while he was being handled. I'm sure my Cleo will soon relax and become tame, all a case of time. I've got all the time in the world for my animals!! |
