Hi guys,
My name is John and you guys have a very good forum and i am looking forward to being apart of it :)
I have recentlty purchased my first cornsnake after about a month of reseach and forum reading. He's hatchling Sunglow called Herby. Now when i went to choose the snake i think the snake chose me because of how eager he was to meet me and how relaxed he was during handling.
Now i know you guys get hassled with alot of questions but i want whats best for my little fellow so hopefully you guys can helps.
1) the log sheets is as follows; first Shed 21/08/10 fed 31/08/10 NF 11/09/10 fed
does this look like a good healthy log sheet for Herby? Feeding is due tomorrow on the 16th. However i know i must leave him a week for stress reasons. Would it be fine to try feed him a day earlier as there is alot of conflicting information out there saying when to feed (3-4days in a book i'v got, 5-6 days on other sources). I would like to keep him in routine as much as i can.
2) My setup never came with a thermostat. It currently has a 7wat heatmat covering half the faunarium (exo terra breeding box). When i left it for a day and checked the heat coming from the surface of the viv where the snake would be it felt slighly warm but i wouldnt say really warm.
I do plan and getting a stat as i want perfect temp so would the thermmostat attach to my current heatmat or would i have to get a new one. if so why do these reptile shops sell just heatmats?
3) feeding for the first time. When it comes to feeding whats the best way to do it. Many people sya put it seperate tub. I still have the small tub the snake came it(locust prepack box) should i just place him in there with the pinky or should i have some interaction with him while doing it.
Im not too sure about this and would like to get him to feed first time so theres no dramas and i wont have to worry about him.
Sorry for the long winded message but i thought id try and get much detail in as possible.
Thanks in advance and hoping to get to know you all better soon and btw ill post some pics of Herby when i can :) |

Hi, good to see you getting a stat, but would suggest you turn the heat mat off, until you get the stat, as you have no way to regulate it. The mats can get extremely hot and may damage your faun, and overheating can damage your snake. hope you get the stat as soon as.
Feeding can be done in a spare rub or in the Faun so long as you make sure your snake cant digest any substrate all will be fine, It is what you feel more comfortable with. |

i know you have said you will get a stat but i just wanted to say, just because your snake LOOKS ok in the plastic viv with no stat doesnt mean they are.
my first snake died because of exsessive regurgitation caused by the heatmat being too warm (i too was a complete newbie to keeping snakes) and i had no stat.
she was fine when i brought her home and my "reptile specialist" (later found out to be money grabbing beeeeps) had said i had everything id need,( faunarium, aspen, water bowl & heatmat) so off i went and for the first few weeks she was fine but then she was regurging every meal and not drinking, at one point her water dish (metal) which was in the COLD end burnt me when i was doing water changes.
please think of your snake because if the mat feels AT ALL warm to you then your snake will be BURNING but not necessarily visibly burning.
please dont let anything like my story happen to you.

Hi Welcome to the forum. Herby is a handsome little chap! I think the only one of your questions that wasn't answered is how often to feed Herby. While he is a small hatchling most people would feed every 4-5 days, then as he gets older and bigger the time is gradually lengthened to between 10-14 days as an adult. However this is not set in stone. Snakes can go a long time without feeding. Some don't eat at all during the breeding season and there are lots of posts on here from very worried owners! The log suggests that he's been left 10 days between feeds. That's rather a long time for such a young snake. If he were mine I'd feed him every 5 days but that's just my own personal choice. Hope that has helped but do ask if you want more info! |

Hiya
Yes make sure you get a thermometer, a digital one is best rather than the analogue dial ones.
Herby is lovely btw. |
Best wishes

We can come up with lots of tips if he doesn't eat his pinkie so don't worry about that. |
