Can i use branches or tree stub bits from outside ?

I heard that i need to disinfect them but is that right or will that damige the wood/branches, and what trees are ok as i kno some wood can be posinos to snakes.

prepping wood that shows how to prepare the wood,

there is a list somewhere on here about wood to use and what shouldnt, try using the search function on the top right of the forum screen
