Was just wondering how many of you feed your corns in the vivarium and how many of you take them out to feed? |

I use beech wood-chip stuff as a substrate and to make sure my snake doesn't eat any along with his mouse I take him out and put him in a RUB to feed. Also he strikes hard and squeezes hard which means now and then he bursts his mouse. I'd rather it leaked onto some kitchen towel in the RUB rather than all over his substrate. |

Aww, GregDT, do you mind? I drank too much red wine last night and I'm afraid of a regurge ...No, seriously, LOL though!
I'm surprised two of mine haven't burst their mice, the way they carry on!
I'd prefer to feed out of viv, as it's simpler - yes, the snake can't pick up any substrate (and me and my royal had a scary encounter with the nice artificial foliage the other week - he's eating out of his viv now.) I have a good selection of smaller rubs, put down kitchen paper, put in mouse, put in snake, put on lid, job done, as long as snakey cooperates, which they generally do.
Having said that, there's always one ... Cy, my little Miami, hates being in a box. Goes frantic, in fact, and ignores her mouse. She may improve as she gets older. So I put her a sheet of cardboard in the viv, and she sails over and grabs her mouse. Just needs a bit of supervision.
Spooky, the ghost, was exactly the same when younger, and feeds in-viv too, but she's one of the mad coil merchants - if I put mouse on an acre of newspaper she'd zoom away with it into the substrate. So I use a small rub that has a hole cut in its side as a damp hide - emptied of damp stuff, of course, mouse in at far end, Spooks goes in through the hole, wham, wallop, coil, can't spin out with mouse as she's now in a lump and too big for the hole ...
As you can see, feeding day's fun in our house ...
Uurrggh, I'm still afraid of a regurge ... |

The python feeds in the his rub, he loves his food and as soon as he smells it he will go for ya, we have fed him outside the rub before but trying to get him back in without being bitten was a task and a half, so now we put kitchen roll down in the rub, and feed him on that and when hes done and goes back in his hide we take it out, the corns get fed outside the rub tho, we have seperate boxes for feeding them, the hatchling very hyper so she has to have the lid on, she wont strike tho, shes scared of the tongs lol so we quickly chuck the pinky in and she takes it, lid has to be down shut tho otherwise shes off lol the older corns good tho, put her in a box, she will strike straight away then she will allow us to put her back in the rub without striking or trying to escape lol |

Heya
I mostly feed all mine outside , more time consuming , but some just go hey we are out , mouse , no thanks , I want to explore . So then I have a fight on my hands to get them to feed .
Times when I am really busy I feed them in the vivs (rubs) , I make sure the mice/fuzzies etc are bone dry .
After all , in the wild there is no one hanging around to say ,
" let me clean that for you sir " or "would you like some kitchen roll before you partake of that splending offering "
etc
:) |
One last jump , that's all we have to take Holth . Wearily the old queen gathered heself to spring ; Moreta gratefully began her litany . Black , blacker , blackest - They went between . |

I feed mine outside in a spare faun. But it is purely down to prefferance. If you do feed in the viv, put something underneath the mouse to help stop any substrate sticking to the mouse as if swallowed it could cause an impaction. |

Looks like everyone feeds on the outside then!
As Izzys new I've been feeding her in the faun to help her settle in and making sure the mouse is bone dry. It's a bit of a pain when the mouse gets blood everywhere like it did the other day! The problem I have with feeding her in a tub is that I know I'll struggle getting her back in the faun afterwards cos she'll just want to explore (she's quite active after feeding). I'm gonna try the next feed in a tub and see if I'm quick enough to get the faun lid back on afterwards!! |

What you could do, is if the tub your feeding him in dosn't have a lid, get somebody else to hold him or watch him whilst you put the lid back on the faun. then when your putting him back you just have to put him in and close the little flap on the top, rather than putting the whole lid back on.
As they get a bit older they tend to stop trying to get away all the time. If my mum or a mate is in the room when im feeding the snakes i very often leave the lid off the feeding tub whilst they watch him whilst i write their next feed date on my calander or do all the waters and they very rarely try to escape.
Although the other day casper climbed up the side of the feeding faun onto the lid of his faun and then through one of the flaps. Saved me the job of putting him back so i didn't mind. |

as all my corns are on paper i usually feed in the viv as there's no risk of ingesting a whole sheet of newspaper lol the exceptions are the 2 co-habiting females, and any i want to fully clean out while they're eating - with the juvies in tubs that's every feed!
the boas are mainly fed in their vivs (on newspaper again) as there's NO WAY i'm sticking my hand in the viv when they can smell food defrosting/heating up as they all have a fantastic feeding response (with just 1 exception) |

Is it alright to touch them after feeding though? I know they can regurgitate but I recall something about someone saying that it can injure them if they've just fed? I might be wrong though. |

the not handling for 48 hours after a feed really refers to 'play time' or 'social time' rather than picking them up and placing them straight back in their enclosure.
for ones i feed out of the viv i wait 5-10 mins after they finish feeding to allow the meal to work its way down and for the snake to come down from feeding mode |

Handling them after feeding is fine as long as it's kept to a minimum - personally I lift the snake, using one hand to support the thorax region and the other to support the belly bulge, and put it back in the viv, or pause at the door and let snakey slide in by itself. Or if you feed in a box small enough to put into viv/rub after feeding, you can let the snake climb out by itself.
Having said that, I have been known to give a quick wash to a small snake who has roamed round in a tub with a brained pinky, smearing herself with goo in the process ... all that bacteria And no regurge (keep fingers crossed.) |

I feed 3 in seperate rubs. I usually weigh them in the feeding rubs first then dangle mousy in. Sometimes they go for it straight away, sometimes I get bored on dangling it and just drop it in to wait til they decide to munch. When they have finished i wait until the mouse is about a third of the way down and then just scoop them up and put them straight back in their vivs/fauns, making sure one hand is supporting the bump. Izzy is a bit more fussy. He was fed in the viv before I had him and still wont eat out of it. I put his mouse on some kitchen roll near his hide so he can help himself. But he is still a bit hit n miss whether he eats it or not. |

Thanks for the info guys I remember now that it was my brother that told me about it injuring the snake; he said this when we were little and he prob heard it from a mate so probably not the best of sources!
I was actually considering your suggestion gingerpony. 5 mins after shes fed she's so much more docile, especially if away from her nice hot viv! I think I'll try that on Monday when she's due her next meal. At worst, her faun is inside a larger viv so I can always leave her to explore and then go back to her cave in her own time. |

Pfft, i have to leave my Amel for a good 20-30 in order for him not to have a quick chew on a finger , for such a small snake he has a pretty imense feeding response.
He even strikes and constricts his 2nd pinky. |
