We have a variety of reptiles, bearded dragons, leopard and crested geckos and turtles, which we've had for a number of years, but are new to snakes. Me and my husband have recently bought two corn snakes. One for each of our children, as it's something they've always wanted. They are both Carolina and are kept in separate faunariums. One is 18 months old and is a female. The other is 3 months old and is a possible female, but we are not sure. We've only had them a week and we have had no problems handling the 18 month old. Apart from feeding the 3 month old we haven't held it until tonight. My daughter got her out and after a few minutes of holding her it bit her. It has broken the surface of her finger and drew blood. My daughter didn't seem bothered ab out it at first, but after half an hour she says her fingers are tingling and her arm is going numb. Shall I take her to the hospital? I didn't think corn snakes were that dangerous. Please can anyone advise me. Please can you reply soon, so I can take action. Thanks.

Thanks for your advice. Feel more reassured now. Our daughter seems fine now. I think it was the initial shock, as it was the first time she had been bitten. The only thing that is worrying us is that we researched corn snakes before buying, and wouldn't have just bought anything. We bought it from the pet shop near us and we asked them if we could handle it before buying. Our daughter handled it really well and it seemed really timid, it didn't go for her or anything. When our daughter handled her last night it was under supervision, she wasn't teasing it or anything, she was being really grown up about it (she's only 12). We are a bit worried now that it is really feisty and is going to bite her again. Obviously she is scared about it and am we are worried that it might put her off holding it again. Once again thanks for your advice.

What kind of bite was it? did the snake strike and let go in a defensive manner or did it sort of try and eat her finger?
usually when they do this they kinda push up to the finger, press their noses against it then open the mouth.
If it was the latter then i would think that could be avoided by using something like alcohol gel or a simple hand wash before handling.
If it was the first one, then the snake is gonna have to be watched while she handles it.
I would guess, its the second one, as the first is unlikely to have broken the skin.
Danger wise, the only thing a cornsnake that size is even remotely a threat to is a mouse, they are not venemous in the slightest and even a bite is unlikely to cause any issues.

Alcohol or another type of no water hand cleanser is a good idea with any snakes, before and after handling. Snakes can carry Pseudamonas and Salmonella on their body and mouths.
