Hey all im having a few problems with Whisky's Viv i cleaned it out and disinfected all his stuff before he moved to the new viv after upgrading from a RUB , and i have noticed like 10 tiny flys in his viv and i have never had this problem before with my other snakes??
Could it be from the Light bulb that is on and its attracting these fly's through the vent's ? Whiskey is in blue at the momment i have checked him for mites he looks clean and free of mites , Could these fly's breed and lay mites down ?
I have opened the viv doors and let some of these flys fly out the viv but some how they keep getting back in i think through the vent , could this cause any problems for my whiskey ?? |

Well i don't think there is any chance of the flys laying mites. I guess it could be because of the light in there. Is the viv heated with the light? |

The only tiny flies I've noticed around the house are compost gnats, which like houseplant pots (as the name suggests) and fruit or vinegar flies, which I often see hovering round my evening beer. I think DannyBrown91 is right - they are probably attracted by the light. They certainly won't lay mites. Compost gnats like damp surroundings, in a dry viv they'd soon die off. I'm certain they won't harm your snake - they are harmless, just unsightly.
However, if your snake enjoys a glass of wine, keep the vinegar flies away because these little critters will climb into wine and soon turn it to vinegar! |

as a short term solution could you not put a homemade filter over the vents...ie something like some cut up tights or something?? Stop the little blighters getting in. |

AH. Well, there's always a first time. It could be the time of year, a new batch of bark, a new houseplant, even just the little beasties finding their way into your house ... I take it these are really tiny black flies with grey wings, rather like miniscule skinny houseflies? I get a lot of them in the winter when I bring geraniums etc into the house. They really won't do any harm; they're just a bit of a nuisance. |

corns dont need damp conditions, may cause RI's in your corns, not worth the risk i think. |

I know they don't need damp but i did dry most of it out for the cornsnakes but there are some bits that obv didn't dry out and not to menstion Whisky has been in and out of the water bowl as he is in shedd and getting ready to shedd so everytime he goes in it , it spills water out of it on to the orchid bark.... |
