Hi, we got our '3month old' cornsnake Busta/Bustarella just over a week ago, he came with a starter set up which included a rubbish dial thermometer and no thermostat. I decided to make a 2" viv for him/her and make it full of hides etc. My questions are-
Would a humidity meter as well as a 2 probe digital thermometer be needed?
Does he need to have a thermostat that would have different settings at day and night?
what is the best kind of light to have in the viv, I've had a look through some of the set ups on the site and really like the blue night light set up?
What are the best type of fake plants to use?
And finally is normal solvent free silicon sealant OK to use or does it have to be something specialised?

| hi the only 2 questions i can answer is....its better to have a red light as its really only for your viewing.... and also its best you use aqua sealent for the viv as it doesn't contain any toxins that are harmful to animals as you can use it on a fish tank best place to buy it is on ebay its much cheaper than out the shop...hope this helps sorry i couldn't answer any more as its my hubby that deals with the tepms etc |

no you dont need a humidity meter, corns are fine at normal house humidity.
you say you got a starter kit did this come with a heatmat, if so you dont need a light other than for you to see in the viv. If you ae looking for a light to privde heating would suggest either a ceramic or infra red bulb. Any lighting provided within the viv must be suitably gaurded to preven snakke getting onto the buld and burning, or crushing the bulbs and cutting and burning.
you dont need a day night drop in temps so stat doesnt have to have day night drop, just make sure whatever stat you have s suitable for the heating you are going to be using.
any fake plants should be fine. Be careful you dont have any stems with metal strips inside the stems, you dont want snake damaging itself on exposed edges.

2. no need for a night time drop in temp
3. energy saving, LED or coloured pygmy bulbs are best and should be guarded
4. cheap ones from your local garden centre are as good as reptile branded stuff
5. aquarium silicon sealant is free of nasty things
btw a 2ft viv is very big for a 3 month old corn  |

Cheers for the quick answers, I've ordered a dual digital thermometer from ebay, going to get a thermostat tomorrow, and the sealant. I've also found a small 3 watt fluoro light which shouldn't give off to much heat and comes with a cover over the tube, which I'll silicone in place to be on the save side, I also want to find some blue(night ) LEDs and set the lights on a timer. As for the viv size I was told that if I fill it with plenty of hised, plant etc it sould be ok. Busta is in a 14" faunairium at the moment but we're a bit stuck as to a good place to keep it |
