You don't really have a choice on the snakes size unless you buy a full grown adult, for colour go onto ians vivarium and I'm sure you partner could help you with the set-up and this again can depend on size. |
A very special super, duper thanks for K :3 |

And seeing as your other half is on here, I'm sure he could also give pointers and advice on the setup as well. Or do you not trust his advice????? |

Hey baby <3 ,
To be honest i don't think you would cope with your own snake as you don't like it when the head comes near you.
Also i would stick to sharing whisky for now and then do lots of research on morphs and health stuff and other bits and bobs until you know what your doing as cornsnakes can live up to 25years so they have a long life span also theres the feeding issue where you get scared of that, so you need to have a good think to your self and see if its worth it for you , then you have to think about all the accessorise's that bit don't come cheap , as when hatchling needs to upgrade to a bigger encloser and ect.. Then you have a problem with lets say it bit you then you would not want it to be honest i would just get more confident with Whisky and watch him grow to a full adult size then think if you still want one.
But how ever you do handle him really good but when he gets stressed you get a little scared but i think just need to get used to him but all snakes have different temperments. |

Kehhlyr i do trust his advise but he explains things really complicated and i get confused.

Think SOME of what Ash has said is right Hayley, but I also think that you have gained a lot of experience handling Whiskey and seeing him deal with Romeo etc. Have you helped feed and clean out yet?
As Gmac has said, we all need to start from somewhere and you are actually starting from a better place than a lot of other new owners who have never even held a corn before. I also think it could be very different for you having your own from a hatchling, as it would grow to get used to you and you get used to it. It would be a lot smaller than Whiskey and hopefully you wouldnt be as scared and that would help your confidence. A hatchling would be very skittish to begin with, but it would be small and something you could easily handle....without being scared of it. Maybe you could go into the rep shops that Ash uses and see if you can handle some of their hatchlings, that way you can see what it is like and how you feel. You can also see what types are available.
As for morphs, you can check out Iansviv to see what all the different morphs look like - http://iansvivarium.com/cornsnakemorphs.php. It is really good cos it shows you what the hatchlings and the adults are like, as they change a lot as they go. I know you are very fussy about colour but dont get to set on one particular morph, cos then you can miss out on some beautiful snakes just cos they arent the morph you want.
Ash is right about the cost of things and there is the time and commitment that you need to think about. If you go to stay with him for long periods then you would be leaving your snake unhandled for that time. And, as he has said, they live for a long time so this is not something to go into lightly. What do your parents think?
As for the set up, LittleMick has done a great thread explaining what you need and how to put it all together - http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9878. Have a look at that and hopefully you will be able to understand it better than Ash's explanations!!

my parents aint really bothered as long as it stayed in my room as my mum is scared when they get bigger but im sure she will get used to it as she would see it grow up and everything. i only come to ash's sometimes but only for a day or 2 he mainly comes to mine. thanks for the link i will check them out. i will go to the pet store near me in melton as they have lil hatchlings so i should be able to handle one of them and see. thanks for all the paragraphs im sure it will help me alot.. Ash has told me about corn snakes and how they grow up and what they need and all the temperatures. i just think its time that i got a snake of my own so i can get used to its temperments and watch it grow up as i have seen whiskey grow from a shoelace to 2.5ft which he is still growing. just the thought of getting a snake and something is wrong with it or it is a fussy eater but thats something i got to think about as the vet bils can be high. i have plenty of mates who have corn snakes and i also have ash so he would be able to help with the fussy eating problem as whiskey was once a non feader due to being fussy.
thanks again for all your advice and links xxx |

Hayley i would Avoid Pet shops for reptiles as they will give you wrong information and it will make you more confused lol but there's no harm to go there and handle some of there snakelings.
I will take you to a reptile store or to a private breeder if you want?

I would definitely agree with Ash about not going to a pet shop for advice, as most of them are useless....but they can be useful for you to get a chance to handle a few hatchlings and see what you think....you dont need to tell them that you arent planning on buying anything from them ....
